But all he got was another wretched 3-0 home loss thanks to goals from Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall and Joe Willock.
It is the first time that United have lost eight or more of their first 15 games to start a new season since the 1962/63 campaign, with another injury suffered by Casemiro on his return from an ankle problem sustained on international duty just compounding another chastening night on which serious questions will be asked over the manager's future.
