Brazil international Savinho could also be an option, with none of the Manchester City forwards particularly impressing. Dorgu has been a weak spot for the hosts, who could do with a little bit more poise down the left, which may necessitate the introduction of Shaw into a high-pressure situation, having not played since December 2024 because of injury. Zirkzee would also be a natural replacement for Hojlund should Amorim choose to rotate his strikers in search of a winner.

Ceding possession from the outset, Manchester United were positive in transition, moving the ball with one-touch football through midfield to good effect to release Hojlund and Garnacho - the latter of whom really should have scored with a stooping header 20 minutes in. Guardiola’s side kept control to good effect but were thoroughly unable to test Onana, outside of De Bruyne’s tame effort from just inside the 18-yard box, as the lack of a true line-leading striker became evident rather quickly.
