Manchester United vs Chelsea LIVE: Premier League result, final score and reaction

Old Trafford, home of Manchester United Football Club - (Getty Images)

Follow live coverage as Manchester United face Chelsea today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Manchester City look to make it an unprecedented five titles in a row come the end of 2024/25.

The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool will be chasing Pep Guardiola's side, but just as fascinating will be the race for Champions League places, with more teams than ever before having designs on top-four finishes. Chelsea remain big-spending, Manchester United's latest rebuild continues and both Tottenham and Newcastle will expect improvements this year - yet it was Aston Villa who snared fourth last term.

Meanwhile, it's Southampton, Leicester City and Ipswich Town who made it back to the elite after promotion last year and each will have hope they can make it more than a one-year stay. Follow the latest live action from the Premier League below:

Manchester United vs Chelsea

18:34

The full-time whistle blows and the spoils will be shared between Manchester United and Chelsea after a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. Both sides hit the woodwork in a goalless first half, Chelsea first through Madueke's close-range header before Rashford thumped a volley off the crossbar on the stroke of half-time. It took until the 70th minute to see the first goal of the contest, when after Hojlund was brought down by Sanchez, Fernandes coolly sent the Chelsea goalkeeper the wrong way to put United 1-0 up. However, the lead lasted just four minutes as after Casemiro nodded Palmer's corner away to the edge of the box, the waiting Caicedo smashed a delightful volley into the bottom corner to ensure Chelsea escape with a point. United may feel a little hard done by having accumulated 1.96 xG to Chelsea's 1.53, though a point against an in-form side could prove to be a positive result after another turbulent week at Old Trafford, leaving the Red Devils in 13th, way behind the Blues in fourth. With Amorim not arriving until November 11, Van Nistelrooy will again be in the dugout when United host PAOK in the Europa League on Thursday, the same day Chelsea welcome Noah in the Europa Conference League. That's all we have for you from Old Trafford, so thanks for your company and goodbye!

A final opportunity for United to get the ball into the Chelsea box is wasted as Fernandes' corner doesn't beat the first man.

There was a VAR check to adjudge whether Martinez's foul on Palmer is actually worthy of a red card, though with the check concluded, the referee stays with the booking.

Moments later, the ball again bounces nicely for United as it drops for Fernandes. However, he can't grab his second goal of the contest as he blazes wildly into the Stretford End.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

18:20

CLOSE! United nearly have what would likely be the winner as the ball sits up nicely for Garnacho to hit. He acrobatically fires goalwards, but his effort flies just over the crossbar with Sanchez beaten.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

18:17

Palmer smashes a low cross into the danger area, but Onana gets down well to gather and take the pressure off his defenders.

Since his Premier League debut in February 2020, no player has scored more penalties in the competition than Fernandes (20 - level with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah).

Manchester United vs Chelsea

18:11

Ten minutes left at Old Trafford and all of a sudden this game has caught fire. It really could go either way, especially with how shaky the two defences are looking now.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

18:08

Two of Caicedo's four Premier League goals have come against United, also netting against the Red Devils for Brighton in May 2022.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

18:07

It's now nervy at the back for United, with Jackson tangling with De Ligt and Onana racing out of his goal. The ball eventually falls to Fernandez, but the Argentina international can only fire over the crossbar. Chelsea smell blood!

Manchester United vs Chelsea

18:03

That was Fernandes' first goal in the Premier League this season, last finding the net in the league in April. It's not been his brightest start to a season, but that could provide the spark for an improved remainder of the campaign.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:59

PENALTY TO UNITED!!! Fofana misjudges the flight of Casemiro's diagonal ball into the box for Hojlund, who then manages to bring it down and nip the ball past Sanchez. The Chelsea goalkeeper brings the striker down, and the referee points straight to the spot! What a chance this is for the hosts to take the lead.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:57

Disagreeing with the linesman's decision to award a foul against him, Rashford talks his way into a booking.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:55

Neto cuts onto his right foot and tries to find the bottom left corner, though Onana is alert to get down to his right and make the save. Up the other end, Garnacho sends a tame effort straight at Sanchez.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:54

There's been just the three shots on target in this game so far, two of which have come from the hosts. It's not been the busiest of games for Onana and Sanchez.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:51

United against Chelsea is the most drawn fixture in Premier League history, with 26 of the previous 64 meetings between the sides finishing level. Could that tally be added to here?

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:50

Rashford blasts towards goal, but though the effort takes a potentially awkward bounce, Sanchez does well to hold onto the ball with United attackers ready to pounce upon any mistake.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:48

United have now scored a first-half goal in just two of their last 15 Premier League matches. The slow starts continue to be a problem for the Red Devils.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:45

CLOSE!!! Chelsea are inches away from taking the lead as the ball is worked out to Neto on the left. The former Wolves man shifts past his defender before smashing a low effort goalwards, though it eeks just past the post.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:44

Much like the majority of the first half, it's been a slow start to the second period. You'd imagine the two bosses could be looking to their substitutes pretty soon.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:41

James made the most final third entries (seven) and made more passes in the final third (13) than any other player in the opening 45 minutes.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:40

Hojlund failed to have a touch in Chelsea's box in the first half of this match, and Van Nistelrooy will want his striker to get more involved in the second period.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:36

Chelsea get the ball rolling again for the second period.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:35

Gusto makes way for Cucurella at the interval. James will slide across to right-back.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:23

Chelsea have edged it in terms of xG (expected goals), producing 1.08 to United's 0.62. It wasn't a vintage first half, but with plenty of attacking quality out on the pitch, the two head coaches will be hoping for improvements in front of goal in the second half.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:22

The half-time whistle blows with the scoreline 0-0 between United and Chelsea at Old Trafford. The visitors should have gotten their noses in front when Madueke nodded off the post from close range in what was a bright Chelsea start. United grew into the game, however, with Garnacho firing straight at Sanchez before, on the stroke of half-time. Rashford smashed a volley off the crossbar to end a low-key first half.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:20

HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 CHELSEA

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:20

CROSSBAR! Fernandes lofts a delightful diagonal ball into the box towards the back post, where with the final kick of the first half, Rashford volleys off the top of the crossbar and over. That's as close as United have come.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:18

There will be two minutes of additional time at the end of this first half.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:18

Neto nips the ball past Dalot, who completely wipes him out. He becomes the second United player to go in the book.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:14

Ugarte bundles over Palmer, who was charging towards the heart of the United defence. The former Paris Saint-Germain man receives a booking.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:12

Caicedo (50) is one of only two players with 50 or more combined tackles and interceptions in the Premier League this season, along with Wolves' Mario Lemina (51).

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:10

Fernandes steps up for the free-kick, but it's wasted as he smashes into the wall. A player of his quality would really have expected to do better there.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:09

Colwill gives it away and Ugarte strides forward. He is brought down by Gusto, and the referee blows his whistle just before Hojlund sees a shot brilliantly saved by Sanchez. That would've been hugely controversial had the ball found its way into the back of the net!

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:08

Yellow Card Malo Arthur Gusto

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:05

A nervy moment for Onana sees him drop a cross into the box, though he eventually grabs it at the second attempt.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:04

Despite their edge in possession and shots, Chelsea are yet to test Onana in the United goal. Palmer has been kept relatively quiet, as has Jackson.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:04

Half an hour on the clock at Old Trafford and it is still 0-0. Madueke has had the best chance of the game and really should have put his side ahead, though he could only strike the outside of the post with his close-range header.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

17:00

52% of United's attacks so far have come down their left-hand side; Mazraoui has completed four dribbles with no other player completing more than one.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

16:58

It's been better from the hosts in the last couple of minutes, a much-needed response after a difficult opening to this game. However, it remains goalless at Old Trafford.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

16:56

United catch Chelsea on the counter and a cross from the left reaches Garnacho at the back post. He cuts back onto his left foot before trying to pick out the far corner, but his curling effort doesn't have the required bend and Sanchez makes a comfortable save.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

16:54

United threaten for the first time as Rashford beats his man. He fires a low cross in, though Sanchez is equal to it with his feet before Fernandez misses the rebound. Hojlund wants a penalty after a coming-together with Colwill in the box, but there's nothing doing.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

16:52

United are unbeaten in their last 11 home league games against Chelsea (five wins, six draws), and are looking to win three in a row against the Blues at Old Trafford for the first time since January 1957.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

16:50

As was seen too many times under Ten Hag, United have started really slowly here. The Chelsea defence has been largely untroubled.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

16:48

No player has hit the woodwork more often than Madueke in the Premier League this season (three times)

Manchester United vs Chelsea

16:47

OFF THE POST!!! Chelsea really should be ahead as Madueke nods off the woodwork from close range. Palmer's corner is whipped in from the left, and Madueke is unmarked a couple of yards out from goal. Somehow though, perhaps put off by the nearby Fofana, Madueke can only nod off the outside of the post before Colwill blasts the rebound into the side-netting. How has Madueke missed?

Manchester United vs Chelsea

16:45

Chelsea have looked the more threatening side so far, with Gusto bombing down the right and aiming to get crosses into the box. United are yet to really get going.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

16:44

Four of the last five managers to take charge of their first home Premier League game in charge of United have won, with Ten Hag the exception in August 2022 against Brighton.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

16:41

Palmer again receives the ball in a dangerous area, but De Ligt does well to hold him up before blocking his eventual shot.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

16:39

The influential Palmer gets on the ball in the United third for the first time, but his cross is uncharacteristically overhit and goes out for a throw-in on the far side.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

16:37

It's been a cagey start to proceedings at Old Trafford, with both sides looking to get on the ball without yet threatening the two goalkeepers.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

16:35

Chelsea have named an unchanged line-up for the second time in the Premier League this season, just one fewer time than the Blues did across the whole of last season in the league (three). It appears Maresca has a much better idea of his strongest starting XI than Pochettino did last term.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

16:31

The hosts kick us off and we are under way in Manchester!

Manchester United vs Chelsea

16:31

The two teams make their way onto the Old Trafford pitch ahead of this big Premier League clash.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

16:31

After watching an all-changed side get knocked out of the EFL Cup away at Newcastle United on Wednesday, Maresca again makes 11 alterations to his starting XI with many of his big names returning to the side. Star man Palmer will start behind Jackson, while James will captain the team from left-back. Jadon Sancho, on loan from United, is unavailable for selection.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

16:27

Van Nistelrooy makes three changes from the side that hammered Leicester in the cup, with Onana returning between the sticks for Bayindir while Hojlund is preferred to Zirkzee up top. Mazraoui comes in for Lindelof as Martinez slides back across to his favoured position of centre-half having played left-back against the Foxes.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

16:11

Chelsea have experienced a turbulent time themselves in recent seasons, but finally things seem to be settling down under new boss Enzo Maresca, who has picked up where the now-departed Mauricio Pochettino left off at the back end of last season with a solid start to life at Stamford Bridge. The Blues currently sit sixth, but a win here would take them all the way up to third, leaving Champions League qualification firmly in their sights.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

16:06

The tumultuous reign of Erik ten Hag finally came to an end earlier this week after a shocking start to this season, one that sees them languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League having played nine games. Sporting's Ruben Amorim will take over on November 11, but until then, former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy will be in the dugout. His very brief reign got off to a strong start in midweek as the Red Devils thumped Leicester City 5-2 in the EFL Cup, and he'll be hoping for a similar result from his first Premier League game.
