Jamie Jackson was at Old Trafford this evening. Here’s his report. Thanks for reading this MBM. Nighty night.
Philippe Clement talks to TNT Sports. “Mixed feelings … gutted that we lose … the team wanted to do something special … they were really close … but I’m also very proud … the mentality … they way they stuck to the plan … followed the tactics … they were brave on the ball and created chances … a lot of positives … but we are disappointed about the result … we missed eight players who can be starting XI … then two changes at half-time … players out of position … I cannot ask more … we had chances we didn’t convert … really great experiences for several young players … it is good the players are gutted in the dressing room because that’s the mentality I want to see.”
Ruben Amorim speaks to TNT. “We did well … we played better with the ball … more connections … more speed … we started well but lost control for seven minutes … small, bad decisions … the lads did well … even when we suffered the goal from Rangers, they recovered … we are not playing our best … we are far from that … we improved from the last game … we need to be more clinical … that would help us a lot … it is important [to qualify automatically for the Round of 16] because it is two weeks free to prepare for the Premier League … it was not a perfect performance but good.”
He also reports that Matthijs de Ligt “felt something in his leg … also Leny [Yoro].” As for potential ins and outs: “We don’t know. Until the window is closed, anything can happen.”
Manchester United’s win, combined with all tonight’s other results, means the Europa League group stage now looks like this. United rise to fourth, while Rangers slip to 13th. They travel to Steaua București for their final game next week, now hopeful of qualifying directly for the Round of 16 and skipping the play-offs. Rangers host Union Saint-Gilloise, with their automatic qualification hopes a longer shot but not yet fully extinguished.

Bruno Fernandes talks to TNT Sports. “We know how much it means for the fans … it means the same to us … we are frustrated because we started the year well against Liverpool and Arsenal … the game against Brighton everything went wrong for us … today was important to get the win … we want to go to the final … we want to win every game … we have to prove our character in 90 minutes … at this club you need to win every game … if you don’t it’s going to be difficult … I hope our fans never get used to losing … even if they believe or not in the players, this team has to win every game.”
Bruno Fernandes is at the centre of some intense celebrations. A huge smile plays across the Manchester United captain’s face. His team were the better side on balance, their win deserved, but they squandered chances and were nearly made to pay when Cyriel Dessers capitalised stylishly on Harry Maguire’s sloppiness. Fernandes dug his men out of a hole; now that’s leadership. Some precious breathing space for Ruben Amorim. Meanwhile the less said about Jack Butland’s miserable fate the better. But when the dust settles and the pain of defeat subsides, injury-depleted Rangers can take some plus points from their dogged performance, and coming so close to another big away result in the Europa League. Qualification for the next stage still very much in their hands.
FULL TIME: Manchester United 2-1 Rangers
United win the Battle of Britain! Their reward: a precious three points which put them closer to body-swerving the play-off round.
Updated
90 min +6: Rangers launch a couple of desperate long balls, but lightning isn’t going to strike twice.
90 min +4: Dessers looks a pained man. Hero status denied him by the brilliance of Martinez and Fernandes, plus Jefte switching off.
90 min +3: Shades of the Southampton match. Now it’s bedlam everywhere but the away end. Old Trafford doesn’t half love a last-gasp winner!
GOAL! Manchester United 2-1 Rangers (Fernandes 90+2)
What a response! Martinez curls a long cross in from the left. Fernandes, ghosting in from the right behind Jefte, meets the dropping ball and sweeps an unstoppable shot into the net! Old Trafford bouncing again, and now it’s Philippe Clement’s turn to look stunned!
Updated
90 min +1: On the touchline, Ruben Amorim claps furiously in encouragement. He can’t believe what’s just happened to his team, who were completely on top. But …
90 min: King comes on for Yimlaz. There will be five additional minutes. Old Trafford stunned. The away fans making bedlam.
89 min: That was an awful misjudgement under the high ball by Maguire. But how he was punished! Dessers took a delicate touch to bring the ball under control, and the subsequent spin and finish was incredible.
GOAL! Manchester United 1-1 Rangers (Dessers 88)
Out of nothing, Rangers equalise! A long ball down the middle. Maguire misjudges the flight, allowing Dessers to take a touch, spin and arrow an unstoppable finish across Bayindir and into the bottom right!
Updated
87 min: Garnacho dances in from the left and creams a shot towards the bottom right. Butland parries with a strong arm and continues to make up for that fiasco. Probably just as well the save was made, because earlier in the move, Malacia cleaned out Igamane with a mistimed lunge but somehow a free kick wasn’t awarded.
85 min: Fernandes dribbles his way into the Rangers box from the right. He looks for Hojlund with his cutback, but Raskin has read the danger and clears his lines.
83 min: Rangers are inches away from equalising! Rice wedges a glorious pass down the inside-right to find Dessers into the box. Dessers floats a chip over Bayindir and off the base of the right-hand post! The whistle then goes because Dessers was a smidgen offside.
Updated
82 min: Hojlund comes on for Zirkzee.
81 min: Fernandes whips the free kick towards the near post. Ugarte flashes a header towards the bottom right. It’s surely heading in, but Butland makes a reaction stop that’s as magnificent as his earlier faux pas was egregious. Nothing comes of the resulting corner. That’s a small moment of redemption for the Rangers keeper.
Updated
80 min: Diallo drops a shoulder to get past Jefte on the right. Jefte cynically brings him down, and that’s the first booking of the evening. On 80 minutes! So much for this so-called Battle of Britain. But it’s a free kick in a dangerous position, just to the right of the box.
78 min: Ugarte allows himself to be closed down by Raskin, and is fortunate the ball doesn’t break to the nearby Dessers. United go up the other end, Diallo slashing hysterically wide when presented with a shooting chance just inside the box.
76 min: Dessers fights with Maguire down the inside-left channel. They reach the box and start pulling at each other’s kit. Dessers wants a penalty but he’s not getting one. Maguire shepherds the ball out for a goal kick.
75 min: Igamane works hard again, this time down the inside-left. He forces the ball infield for Curtis, whose shot is only effective as a backpass. Easy for the keeper.
74 min: Igamane does well to bustle his way past Zirkzee on the right. He cuts back for Jefte, on the edge of the D in a pocket of space. He takes a touch and pearls a shot goalwards … but straight at Bayindir. Either side and the keeper would have had a job on.
73 min: A double change by United, who replace Eriksen and Collyer with Mainoo and Ugarte.
72 min: A half-chance for Raskin, who gets on the end of a looping Tavernier cross from the left, but can’t steer a header goalwards. It wasn’t much of an opportunity, but it’s the best Rangers have managed in this second half. Those big early chances for Raskin and Yilmaz seem an awfully long time ago now.
71 min: … so with that in mind, Dessers comes on for Bajrami.
70 min: Curtis holds the ball up on the right flank, before passing back for Tavernier, who crosses long towards McCausland. A weak header drops to Bayindir. Easy for the keeper. Rangers have little or no presence up front in the wake of Cerny’s departure.
68 min: United are completely on top now. Their fans in good voice, sending a signal to their board by serenading Napoli and Chelsea transfer target Garnacho.
66 min: Maguire misses an absolute sitter. Eriksen swings a free kick in from the right. Maguire meets it, unmarked, six yards out, Butland frozen to the spot, only to send his header down and wide right. That should have been game over.
Updated
65 min: Now then, that Butland mistake reminded me of something. But what is it? “John Lukic,” writes Shaun Tooze. “Leeds at Rangers.” Ah yes.
64 min: Garnacho wins a free kick out on the left. It’s right by the corner flag. Eriksen sends it in. Butland punches in the correct direction this time. Twice. That’ll give the poor guy a little succour.
62 min: Rangers were already under-strength coming into the match. Three injuries later, the kids are on, and this could be a long second half for the Light Blues.
61 min: Diallo jinks down the right, reaching the byline and pulling back for Garnacho, who takes a touch and should score from ten yards. He sits Butland down and aims for the top right … where Propper heads clear off the line. It should be 2-0.
59 min: Another huge injury blow for Rangers, as Cerny limps off. On comes Curtis. Rangers have now sent on two 18-year-olds in Curtis and Rice, and a 21-year-old in McCausland.
57 min: A shot of Butland shows most of the blood having drained from his face, his eyes focused on a spot roughly 1,000 yards in front of him. Some stage on which to perform one’s career gaffe.
55 min: Malacia comes on for Yoro.
54 min: That’s an unbelievable mistake, one for the ages. United, with their tails up, go close again, Fernandes sending a diagonal wedge into the Rangers box from the inside-left position. Diallo, having sprung the trap, bicycle-kicks over the bar. Turns out he was offside anyway.
GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 Rangers (Butland 52 og)
Eriksen swings the corner in from the left. Butland rises highest to punch … but only manages to send the ball flying backwards and into the top right! A comedic howler and a pure gift for Manchester United.
Updated
52 min: Yilmaz slips over on the edge of his box, allowing Garnacho to advance to the byline. He cuts back for Fernandes, whose goalbound shot deflects off a blue shirt and out for a corner. From which …
50 min: Cerny drifts in from the right and lets fly. His low drive is heading into the bottom right but Bayindir gets down to claim with safe hands.
49 min: Diallo curls the corner from the right towards the top-left corner. It’s heading in! Igamane heads off the line with Fernandes lurking, hoping to make sure. Rangers counter, Yilmaz crossing from the left. Rice meets it with a half-volley, but leans back and balloons into the stand behind. Close at both ends!
48 min: Not for the first time tonight, Eriksen and Diallo combine well down the right. Eriksen reaches the byline and his shot-cum-cross is turned out by Tavernier for a corner.
47 min: Fernandes heads it clear. Meanwhile here’s Simon McMahon: “Rangers next game is on Sunday at Tannadice, from where Dundee United will be looking to bounce back after defeat in the Scottish Cup on Monday. It would be churlish of me not to congratulate Dundee on lifting the old trophy for the first time since 1910 beating United in the Scottish Cup for the first time since 1956. This despite United having three goals disallowed for various reasons, completely dominating the second half, having efforts cleared off the line, hitting the post in stoppage time and the Dundee goalkeeper being named man of the match. But apart from that a well deserved win for Dundee. And if United do the same to Rangers on Sunday, I’ll take it.”
46 min: A really strange start to the second half as Dalot deals with a long ball by slicing it backwards and out for a Rangers corner. Cerny to take from the right.
United get the second half started. Those two injuries for Rangers, then. Neither Barron nor Balogun have come back out, so on come McCausland and Rice. Meanwhile United have swapped out De Ligt for Maguire.
Half-time advertisement. Prices start at £55 and all sets come with a three-month guarantee. Great value that will be right up Sir Jim’s street.
HALF TIME: Manchester United 0-0 Rangers
Both teams have had good opportunities to score. United have been the better side, though, so none of their players should worry about their manager forcing them to wear the dressing-room TV like an Elizabethan ruff, or whipping them with the HDMI cable.
45 min +4: Balogun, like Barron before him, is able to continue. For what that’s worth with the half-time whistle looming.
45 min +3: Now Balogun needs some attention from the physio, having been clipped by Zirkzee.
45 min +2: Igamane and Yilmaz bustle as one down the inside-left channel, causing the United defenders to drop back in a panic. They nearly break through the back line, but the ball doesn’t fall Rangers’ way, and then Igamane stands on Martinez’s toe to release the pressure on the hosts. For a nanosecond there, United hearts were in mouths.
45 min +1: The first of three additional minutes trundles by.
45 min: The corner comes in. Dalot heads it harmlessly wide right. Meanwhile here’s James Humphries again: “Never in a month of Sundays is that a foul before the United goal - it’s barely even a jostle! Rangers getting bailed out by the ref again though, standard. <grumbles in angry non-old-firm fan>”
44 min: Barron may have hurt himself in a 50-50 with De Ligt. A jarred knee. But he’s able to get up and walk to the sideline. United to take a corner against ten men.
43 min: Martinez pearls a rising diagonal shot towards the top-right corner. Butland has to extend fully to tip over the bar. Before the resulting corner can be taken, Barron goes down holding his leg. On comes the physio.
42 min: Bayindir is fine to continue.
41 min: Bayindir needs a bit of attention having been whacked upside the head in the process of saving his team from further corner-infused humiliation.
40 min: Tavernier curls the second corner viciously in from the left. It’s heading directly into the top right. Not again for United? But Rangers don’t get to add their name to a list already including Tottenham and Wolves this season, because Bayindir claws out from under the bar. Great save under pressure!
Updated
39 min: One corner leads to another.
38 min: … so having said that, Igamane has a whack from distance. He aims for the top right, but the ball deflects off Martinez’s chest and nearly whistles into the bottom left. Bayindir does extremely well to change direction and turn the shot around the post.
37 min: Fernandes and Dalot combine down the left to tee up Zirkzee, just inside the box. His low drive is deflected. United are getting on top now.
36 min: Diallo one-twos elegantly with Eriksen down the right, and suddenly Rangers look exposed. A poor pass infield lets the visitors breathe again. But the hosts come straight back at Rangers, Fernandes slipping a ball down the inside-right channel for Diallo, who finds himself one on one with Butland. He slams his shot straight at the keeper, who nonetheless spread himself well to block.
Updated
34 min: Fernandes tries to release Garnacho down the left but makes his intention too obvious and Tavernier steps across to intercept. Frustrated yelps from the home fans.
32 min: Bayindir punches clear. Then it’s Diallo’s turn to bring down a ball with snow on it with a feathered touch. He draws a foul from Yilmaz, who is slightly fortunate not to go into the book. A more pernickety referee might have flashed yellow there.
31 min: The corner comes in. Dalot eyebrows it away from danger. Yoro thinks it’s going out for a goal kick, so ushers it over the line. But it’s another corner, this time to come in from the left courtesy of Tavernier.
30 min: Cerny again down the right. This time he wins a corner off Dalot, Rangers’ first of the evening. Cerny to take it himself.
29 min: Cerny crosses long from the right. Yilmaz takes it down on the byline with an exquisite touch … the only problem being his having been caught offside. Still, a lovely bit of skill to kill a ball coming down from the heavens.
27 min: Garnacho spins and swivels his way down the left and makes enough space to whip a cross through the six-yard box. Really dangerous. But there’s nobody there in red to tap home.
26 min: United go long for Diallo, who worms his way down the right flank to no real effect. The hosts still reeling from having their bubble popped back there.
24 min: VAR doesn’t overturn it. United fuming. Nothing going poor Ruben Amorim’s way at the moment. He stares at the ground ruefully.
23 min: The ball flies in from the right. De Ligt steers in a header at the near post from six yards. He tears off to celebrate the goal, but it’s ruled out by the referee, Yoro ruled to have shoved Propper in the back. It’s soft, but the referee having made the decision, VAR’s not going to overturn it.
Updated
22 min: Dalot busies himself down the left and cuts back to … nobody in particular. But the ball pings off a blue shirt and into the road of Garnacho, who shoots from 12 yards. His rising effort flies off Raskin’s head for a corner. From which …
21 min: Igamane slips a pass down the inside right for Bajrami, who attempts to find Cerny with a cutback. Intercepted, but United’s back line was cut through too easily there.
20 min: Zirkzee advances down the left but his low cross is easily dealt with by Propper, who clears his lines without drama. In lieu of which, here’s Motherwell fan James Humphries: “It does occur to me that if Rangers do somehow jam a win, then via the age-old principle of footballing transitivity we’re better than Man United, which I don’t think has been a thing you can say of Motherwell since about the 1930s.”
18 min: Fernandes hasn’t seen much of the ball, but now he gets on it and takes aim for the top-left corner. That’s high and wide too. United beginning to reassert themselves.
17 min: De Ligt plays a careless backpass that Igamane should intercept. He doesn’t, though. Had he managed to do so, he’d have been clean through. Yoro mops up to do his team-mate a favour.
16 min: Garnacho cuts in from the left and has a dig from distance. Wide and high. Butland yet to be tested.
15 min: Diallo thinks about a dribble down the right. There’s a light touch on the back of his shirt from Jefte, so he stops, waiting for the whistle to blow. But there’s no free kick forthcoming. United come again, though, Collyer winning the first corner of the game down the same flank. Diallo swings it in, and Igamane heads clear. This doesn’t feel like a game destined to end goalless.
13 min: … but because of those two chances, Rangers suddenly look a lot more comfortable and composed. A period of calm possession for them at the back.
11 min: Another big chance for Rangers! A ball looped down the inside-left channel for Yilmaz, who enters the box and larrups goalwards. Bayindir parries. United already looking shaky at the back. Rangers really should be leading.
Updated
9 min: Rangers should be leading. Collyer has his pocket picked 30 yards from goal. Igamane slips a pass down the middle to release Raskin, who finds himself one on one with Bayindir. He tries to round the keeper on the left, only for the ball to get stuck under his feet, allowing Bayindir to block. Huge chance.
Updated
8 min: Butland launches long. Igamane picks up possession in the midfield and spins into space, only to then lash a wild pass into the stand on the left. Even so, it’s another moment for Rangers in United territory, and after their slow start it should give them hope of gaining a foothold.
7 min: Diallo bombs down the right and nearly gets the better of Jefte. Not quite. Then Rangers take up possession, Cerny racing down the Rangers right at speed. He can’t find Igamane with his pass infield, but that’s the first showing of Rangers in attack.
5 min: Eriksen makes good down the right and fizzes a low cross into the mixer. Balogun does the work for Rangers again, hooking clear under pressure from Zirkzee.
4 min: Dalot flicks Garnacho into space down the left. Garnacho enters the box and prepares to cross, only for Balogun to slide in and block with a perfectly timed tackle.
3 min: Garnacho dribbles in from the left, in the old-fashioned jinking Scottish style, and has a whack. Straight at Butland. Meanwhile up in the stand, the one-time Rangers starlet Alex Ferguson watches on.
Updated
2 min: United are immediately on the front foot. Garnacho and Dalot probe down the left. Then a look for the one-time Rangers starlet Diallo on the right. Rangers yet to have a significant touch.
The latest Battle of Britain is go, Rangers kicking off. They’ll be kicking towards the Stretford End in this first half.
The teams are out! United in red, Rangers in blue, the away end is bouncing, the home fans too. A huge banner in the Stretford End celebrating the life of the legendary Denis Law. The King. We’ll be off in a couple of minutes. “I’d suggest that the TV in the United dressing room just show reruns of Coronation Street,” writes Justin Kavanagh. “It’s Mancunian soap at its best, before the American imports like Dynasty got their grubby mitts on British sport and telly.”

Rangers boss Philippe Clement speaks to TNT. “It’s a very big one … the players have worked really hard to get in a good position in the Europa League … this is one of the most iconic places to go to in football … really special … I don’t want them to come here to collect shirts or be happy to be here … they come here to perform and do something special … defend really well … compact … aggressive without getting cards … be brave on the ball … we have not come to park the bus … to believe in ourselves … find the right spaces … the system is really clear how Man U is playing so we need to find the right spaces in between.”

Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim talks to TNT. “It’s always good to be back on the field … we’d like to have more practice … that would be important for the games … but this is my job … to try to help my players to win games so I am really happy to have the opportunity … the players know me … it is easier for them to recognise what I am saying than other people … I don’t control what other people think and say … but it was a little bit my fault to create all that … it is in the past … the next game is today … really important … we need to win … time to train and escape the play-offs … and have that feeling of winning at home … it is impossible to be competitive in Premier League and in Europe, especially in Europa League … it is much harder than the Champions League … not the opponents of course but the time to recover … the players have to be prepared for every game … I expect a very tough match … very British with a lot of duels … I want to see improvement … improve with the ball … be more relaxed … I will try to help them outside the pitch a little bit more.”

Preamble
It’s the worst Manchester United team in history, some say. Ruben Amorim shouldn’t worry too much about that, however, because it’s not as though the current Rangers team is of classic vintage either. Both sides are in decent form in the Europa League, mind. It’s eighth versus ninth, with United unbeaten and Rangers coming off the back of a 4-1 win in Nice and an Ibrox draw with Tottenham Hotspur. Kick-off is at 8pm GMT. In the meantime, Amorim will be giving his players the usual pre-match pep-talk, issuing beneficial advice with the help of visual aids such as chalkboard, tactics table, and … oh yes, he’ll need one of those as well, won’t he. We recommend these guys. Great service, great sets, and their parent company has great brand recognition in the Manchester area.
