Manchester United turn attentions to Alex McCarthy after Illan Meslier interest

Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing former Leeds United loanee and Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy to deputise for David de Gea., according to 90 Min.

The reason why McCarthy's potential move to Old Trafford will come as good news for Leeds supporters is that it will steer Man United's focus away from Illan Meslier.

The Sun reported on Friday that the Red Devils were considering Meslier as a long-term replacement for de Gea. However, The Athletic claim a sum of £7m has been set aside for a new goalkeeper, which means Man United will have to wait until future transfer windows to attempt to sign the young Frenchman.

McCarthy started on the bench for the Saints' draw against Leeds on Saturday, as he did in Southampton's 4-1 drubbing at Tottenham Hotspur in their Premier League opener. His chances of regaining the number one spot at Saints looked a possibility when Fraser Forster, who deputised for McCarthy during his spell out with injury, left for Spurs this summer.

Gavin Bazunu, who spent last season on loan at Southampton's fierce rivals Portsmouth, was signed from Manchester City for a fee of £12m. Ralph Hasenhuttl has thus far preferred the young Republic of Ireland international between the sticks over McCarthy.

Dean Henderson has left Old Trafford to join Nottingham Forest on loan, while Lee Grant announced his retirement in May. Therefore, veteran Tom Heaton is their only senior goalkeeper other than de Gea and 90 Min claim McCarthy is one of the options being considered.
