Manchester United training squad vs Real Sociedad as two key forwards absent

Anthony Martial trained with Manchester United's first-team squad ahead of Thursday's match against Real Sociedad, but Antony was not spotted at open training at Carrington after being absent from the squad to play West Ham on Sunday.

Martial has been unavailable since he was taken off with a back injury in the first half against Everton at Goodison Park last month.

That setback was the latest injury blow for the player, following hamstring and Achilles injuries this season, but he's now returned to full first-team training, and is in contention to figure in United's final Europa League group match against Real Sociedad.

Antony did not participate in the session at Carrington after being absent from the squad to play West Ham. "He is injured. I hope it’s not too bad, I think it’s not too bad. In a couple of days he will be back," Ten Hag said on Sunday about Antony. Jadon Sancho was another absentee from the training session.

Harry Maguire, Donny van de Beek and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who all returned to training last week after their respective spells on the sidelines, did train at Carrington, while Victor Lindelof also trained after being unwell before FC Sheriff last week.

Alejandro Garnacho, Zidane Iqbal, Facundo Pellistri and Shola Shoretire were the youngsters that took part in the session.

United training squad ahead of Real Sociedad:

Goalkeepers: Bishop, Dubravka, Vitek, De Gea.

Defenders: Dalot, Wan-Bissaka, Martinez, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw, Malacia.

Midfielders: McTominay, Fernandes, Fred, Iqbal, Casemiro, Eriksen, Van de Beek, Shoretire.

Attackers: Elanga, Rashford, Ronaldo, Martial, Garnacho, Pellistri

If United finish second in their Europa League group, they will play a club that finished third in the Champions League group stage in a play-off to reach the last 16, and Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Juventus are possible opponents for that stage of the competition.

United must beat Real Sociedad by two or more goals in Spain to ensure they claim the top spot in the group.
