Manchester United told to prioritise John McGinn transfer over Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham

Manchester United have been told why Aston Villa's John McGinn is the ideal midfield addition ahead of what looks to be a busy summer at Old Trafford.

The Scot has become renowned in the Premier League for his tenacious displays in the middle of the pitch for the claret and blue.

His absence for the draw with the Reds last month was heavily felt but Steven Gerrard's side clawed two goals back to salvage a point.

United's current midfield options have been subject to criticism for their displays but ahead of the upcoming transfer window, the Manchester Evening News understands that the Reds have pinpointed the department as the 'biggest problem'.

And former Premier League playmaker Joe Cole believes the Scotland international is a perfect fit to patch up some of the problems at the Theatre of Dreams.

"Especially for Manchester United, you look at that club and you constantly hear noises about this player is unhappy because the manager said this and this player’s unhappy because he’s been given time here and he didn’t want it and all this," he said on BT Sports.

"You just want lads like him through the door.

"First of all, they have to be good enough and he’s certainly good enough as a footballer but that is so valuable for a manager in the current climate.

"You know you haven’t got to mollycoddle him, he’s going to come in and do his job. He’s not an Instagram footballer, he gets on with it and does his job."
