Manchester United to increase safe standing area at Old Trafford this season

Manchester United are to add a further 2,100 safe-standing seats at Old Trafford next season after declaring a trial at the ground to be a success, bringing the total to 6,000.

The additional rail seats will be added in the south west quadrant of the stadium, adjoining the Stretford End and the home of the Red Army fan group, who have been adding to the atmosphere at the stadium in recent seasons.

Installation of the new seats is set to be completed ahead of the first game of the Premier League season against Wolves on Monday, August 14.

United first introduced safe standing at Old Trafford in January 2022, when the ground was one of five chosen for a trial period, which began with 1,500 rail seats in the north east quadrant and 2,500 in the away end.

Rick McGagh, United's head of fan engagement, said supporters had been campaigning for more rail seats to be introduced since the trial began. The club will continue to review the options of using it elsewhere in the stadium as well.

He said: “We believe safe-standing areas give fans choice about how they watch the game, and increase safety in areas where persistent standing has historically occurred.

“It is something our fans have long campaigned for and we are delighted with the overwhelmingly positive feedback from supporters who have stood in the areas we have operated for the past 18 months.

“We are committed to improving the matchday experience for all our fans. And we will continue to review the potential to install it in other areas of the stadium where appropriate.”
