Manchester United to face Charlton Athletic in Carabao Cup quarter-finals following Burnley win

Manchester United will face Charlton Athletic in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford.

The Reds, who last won the competition back in 2017, defeating Southampton 3-2 in the final at Wembley, sealed their place in the last-eight with a routine 2-0 win over Burnley at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening. Goals either side of half-time from Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford sealed a winning start to the restart for Erik ten Hag's side.

Burnley dominated possession for long spells in the first half, just as they often do in the Championship, but did little to test United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka ahead of Eriksen opening the scoring. Rashford made sure of the victory with a stunning solo goal shortly before the hour mark.

United's reward for seeing off the Championship table-toppers is a quarter-final showdown with Charlton next month. The Addicks sealed their place in the last-eight with a win over Brighton on penalties on Wednesday evening.

Following Wednesday night's win over Championship outfit Burnley, United boss Erik ten Hag was asked about his side's prospect of winning the Carabao Cup this season.

"We will see the draw," he replied. "We want to win every game so we will watch what comes out of the pot and we will prepare well, we want to beat them."

His side will now face the only non-Premier League outfit left in the competition with a place in the semi-finals up for grabs. Quarter-final ties will take place in the week commencing January 9, 2023.
