Manchester United takeover update issued as Michael Knighton says bid is 'moving forward'

Former Manchester United director Michael Knighton has suggested that his plan to submit a formal offer to buy the club is progressing 'as planned.'

Last month, Knighton, who came close to buying United back in 1989, confirmed that he was drawing up plans to submit a formal bid to buy the Reds from the Glazer family with the help of a consortium. The 70-year-old is no stranger to Old Trafford, serving on the club's board of directors after his failed takeover attempt more than 30 years ago.

Confirmation of Knighton's interest in buying the club last month was received with a mixed response from United's supporters. Many of them welcomed the idea of someone attempting to oust the Glazers, but they doubted whether he had the financial capabilities to buy them out.

A spokesperson for fellow British businessman Sir Jim Ratcliffe, also last month, confirmed that he, too, would be interested in buying the club if the opportunity presented itself. But while nothing concrete has developed over the last few weeks in regards to a potential takeover, Knighton has suggested that his plans to submit an offer are moving in the right direction.

On his Twitter page, Knighton posted: "Thank you, all, for the wonderful messages of support. There is much going on behind the scenes.

"Things are moving forward as planned. I apologise I can't be on this platform more, just bogged down in meetings.

"God bless & every good with to all of you. Your support is greatly appreciated."

Confirming his interest in buying United last month, Knighton, speaking to Man Utd The Religion, said: "We are a club in crisis and we all know the reason why. We have an inept and frankly useless ownership who know little about this game of football.

"Everyone knows that we need new ownership of this football club and that is my aim and those are my objectives. I am making good progress, continuing to talk to the people, I have got some good pledges and good finance.

"We are now working on the offer document. Remember, it is a hostile bid - that simply means that the club isn't officially for sale. But my intention is to present these owners with a legitimate, potent and commercial offer to say: 'You have run out of road, it's time go, because your time is up'.

"And frankly, the fans worldwide have had enough of this regime. The exciting feeling of a new season, which we all have, and that balloon of excitement that is there, it was all burst when we quickly saw the performance against Brighton. The club is in crisis and it will remain in crisis while we have this current ownership."
