Manchester United star Jadon Sancho breaks social media silence after Man City defeat

Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho has issued an apology to the club's supporters following Sunday's 4-1 defeat to arch rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

United, who were beaten 2-0 by City in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford back in November, were no match for their cross-city counterparts, with two goals each from Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez sealing a comfortable win for the home side. Sancho, following De Bruyne's early opener, did bring United level with an excellent strike, but City turned the heat up after the break and got the job done with ease.

United folded and collapsed in the second half, failing to register a single shot on goal. City, who netted twice after the break through Mahrez, dominated the second period of the game and every pass was greeted with a chorus of 'ole's from their fans, with United proving to be no match and, ultimately, giving up once Mahrez made it 3-1.

Despite being a player that could take a glimmer of positivity from the performance, Sancho has taken to social media to issue an apology, becoming just the second Reds player to do so in the process.

On Twitter, the winger said: "Apologies to the fans... it's not good enough. We have to look [at] ourselves as players and work hard to make things right.

"We will keep on fighting."

Sancho, who, for a short time, looked as though he would come back to haunt his former a club after scoring United's equaliser, has been one of the Reds' best players in recent weeks, as highlighted by winning his maiden Player of the Month award for February. He has now scored five times this season and claimed two assists.

The defeat to City was another stark reminder of just how much work is to be done at United, both on and off the pitch, over the coming months. However, interim manager Ralf Rangnick has admitted that he was fully aware of the size of the task when he accepted the job in November.

"I knew that before I came," Rangnick stressed. "I wouldn’t have needed that game to be aware of that.

"For now, it is about developing the team, finishing the season as well as we possibly can and all the other things are issues that need to be spoken about and hopefully developed at the end of the season in the next transfer window."
