Manchester United and England supporters were sent wild by Ella Toone and Georgia Stanway after those two saved the day for England during their gripping Euro 2022 showdown against Spain at the Amex Stadium.
England went goal crazy on a previous visit to the south coast — when Manchester City and United players inspired them to run riot and win 8-0 over Norway in the group stages — but given what was at stake this game was understandably a little more measured in its style, although the end result was again in the Lionesses' favour.
Mary Earps had to be on alert to keep Spain out early doors, though, while City striker Ellen White flicked a header wide as the Lionesses carved out their first opportunity. However, clear chances proved to be few and far between during the opening 45 minutes and, at that stage, the deadlock had yet to be broken.

Upon the restart, England pushed higher in order to get a grip on the game, but that attacking intent proved to be their downfall initially as Esther Gonzalez turned home from close-range. It meant the Lionesses had around half an hour to keep their dreams of a home triumph alive after being conceding for the first time this tournament.
Boss Serina Wiegman summoned United forwards Alessia Russo and Toone from the bench and, as Spain appeared to be edging towards victory, it was those two who combined to give the Lionesses a lifeline and sent the match into extra-time. In a role reversal, Russo nodded down Toone to apply the finishing touch.
Needless to say, that memorable equaliser sent United supporters and England followers in general into a frenzy on social media platforms — and that spilled into overdrive when former City player Stanway made it 2-1 when the two teams re-emerged for 30 additional minutes, scoring a brilliant goal from range. England managed to cling onto victory through extra-time.
