Manchester United star David de Gea handed fresh Spain snub after squad drop-out

Manchester United shot-stopper David de Gea has been handed fresh disappointment after being shunned again by Spain boss Luis Enrique, this time to replace Robert Sanchez.

The 31-year-old was a shock omission from the squad for Spain's March internationals to face Albania and Iceland, when the squad was announced earlier this month. With the in-form goalkeeper left in the cold, David Raya, Robert Sanchez and first-team regular Unai Simon were called up.

On Saturday, the Brighton goalkeeper was forced to withdraw from their two friendlies due to personal reasons. As his replacement, 20-year-old Barcelona B goalkeeper Arnau Tenas was called up to the senior squad.

De Gea has been one of the standout players for United this season, in what has been a disappointing campaign. The veteran has been instrumental for denying guilt-edge opportunities in key moments of matches as United's faint hopes of Champions League football remain alive as they sit just outside the top four.

But for the former Atletico Madrid-man, his time out of the squad continues and he hasn't featured for his national side since their 1-0 win over Ukraine in October 2020. De Gea's omission poses questions over his involvement in the Qatar World Cup in November after failing to feature at Euro 2020 and in any of Spain's World Cup qualifiers.
