Manchester United monitoring Arnaut Danjuma

Manchester United are keeping tabs on Arnaut Danjuma ahead of the summer transfer window, but a move for the Villarreal star remains unlikely under Erik ten Hag.

The Manchester Evening News understands United are still fond admirers of the Dutch winger a year after he was considered as an alternative to Jadon Sancho and he has a €45million release clause which can be activated this summer.

Instead, United chose to spend £73million on long-term target Sancho while then-Bournemouth winger Danjuma moved to La Liga side Villarreal for €25 million.

Danjuma enjoyed an incredible debut season in Spain, netting 16 goals and four assists as his side reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.

The Dutch international scored in victories over Juventus and Bayern Munich on their journey to the last four of the competition and impressed United first-hand with a sensational solo performance at Old Trafford last September.

It is understood United seriously discussed the possibility of signing Danjuma a year ago but were cautious about moving for a player who was, at the time, playing in the Championship.

Ten Hag's side are still admirers of his talent, but sources appreciate a move is unlikely this summer given how overstocked United are on the left wing.

Despite being signed to play on the right wing a year ago, the majority of Sancho's appearances in his debut campaign came on the opposite flank. Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Anthony Martial, Anthony Elanga, Hannibal Mejbri and Alejandro Garnacho all played on the left wing for United this season.

United want to sign one forward with a preference for another this summer, to offset the exodus of attack-minded players who are out of contract next month, though a right-sided forward would be preferred to balance out their attack.

Ajax forward Antony has been linked with United after playing under Ten Hag for two years and Ralf Rangnick recommended Christopher Nkunku of RB Leipzig before he walked away from his planned consultancy role.

United enquired about Tottenham striker Dane Scarlett before it was announced he had signed a new contract and made initial enquiries about signing Lyon forward Moussa Dembele back in March.
