Furious Manchester United have promised to "educate" the fans who were heard singing about Hillsborough at Anfield on Tuesday night.
A small band of visiting supporters took part in vile chants mocking their rivals over the harrowing stadium disaster in 1989, where 97 Liverpool fans lost their lives.
It was flagged up to authorities and United have now released a statement condemning those who took part.
A club spokesperson said: “Manchester United stands in solidarity with Liverpool and its fans in remembering the victims of the Hillsborough disaster.
“Offensive chants about the tragedy are completely unacceptable and we will work with our supporters’ groups to educate fans on the issue.”
The disgusting behaviour came on the same night that both sets of fans briefly put differences aside to show respect for Cristiano Ronaldo.
The United No.7 was absent after the death of his newborn sun and fans in both ends rose to applaud in the seventh minute.
Liverpool won the game convincingly as they moved to the top of the English Premier League.
