Manchester United set Harry Maguire valuation as he prepares for Erik ten Hag talks

Manchester United's valuation of Harry Maguire could prevent him from leaving the club this summer unless there is a compromise on any fee.

United are understood to have valued Maguire at £50million as a starting price, a figure that is highly unlikely to be offered by any club.

Maguire, 30, joined United for £80m in 2019 - a world-record fee for a defender - but he lost his place only two games into last season.

Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw are all ahead of Maguire in the central defensive pecking order.

United manager Erik ten Hag favours a right and left-footed centre-back combination and left-back Shaw excelled in his 11 starts in the middle last season.

Although Maguire's international pedigree maintains some resale value, he started only 16 games for United last season and half were in cup ties. Maguire's peripheral status means interested clubs will balk at United's initial asking price.

England manager Gareth Southgate warned that Maguire's lack of playing time is unsustainable in preparation for the European Championship next June.

Southgate has already touted Levi Colwill and Taylor Harwood-Bellis, starters in England Under-21s' European Championship final victory over Spain, as budding centre halves to provide competition.

United provisionally planned for Maguire's sale at the start of the year as he has two years left on his contract.

Despite Maguire's lowly standing, United are not actively looking to sell the former Leicester defender as they would have to recruit an upgrade to replace him.

United have already released centre halves Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe while reserve defender Teden Mengi has suffered two significant injuries in the last 16 months.

On Sunday, Maguire bizarrely shared a post from an Instagram transfer account that claimed he is waiting to speak to Ten Hag about his future.
