Manchester United's WSL U21 academy make the finals for the second consecutive year

Manchester United’s U21 Women's Super League academy takes to the final for the second year in a row, facing Chelsea at the Cobham Training Centre with the date yet to be confirmed.

On Wednesday evening, the defending League Cup champions put five past Birmingham City in a 5-1 victory over last year’s runners-up to progress into the latter stage of the tournament.

Keira Barry got two, Holly Deering and Ella Kinzett and Jessica Simpson also on the score sheet for the United Academy side but with just three minutes of play left, the Blues’ Hannah Fishwick found the net for their consolation goal.

To get into the latter stages of the competition, United beat Aston Villa Academy 2-1 and Leicester City 4-1 both at Moss Lane in late 2022. Eleanor Ashton, Barry, Kiznett and Megan Sofield scored United’s six goals in the knockout stages.

In the final, they face Chelsea who beat Arsenal 2-1 in the semis, Reading 4-0 in the quarter-finals and Ipswich 7-1 in the first round.

Last year's League Cup final saw the Reds come away with the trophy against Birmingham City with Barry on the scoresheet yet again alongside Alyssa Aherne and Rebecca May in their 4-1 win.
