Manchester United's remaining Premier League fixtures compared with Newcastle and top four rivals

Manchester United tightened their grip on a top four berth with a 2-0 win over Wolves at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

Anthony Martial put United ahead just past the half hour mark, turning the ball home from close range, before the returning Alejandro Garnacho made the points safe in stoppage time. He had earlier stepped off the bench to make his first appearance since suffering an ankle injury two months ago.

United were the better side for long spells of the contest and really ought to have been out of sight before Garnacho settled proceedings in the closing stages. Nevertheless, they did enough to get the job done, halting their two-game losing run in the process.

The victory means United have reopened a four-point gap on fifth-placed Liverpool and moved level on points with third-placed Newcastle United, who dropped points at Leeds United in the lunchtime kick-off, drawing 2-2. Verdict: With three games to go, United, regardless of what Liverpool do at Leicester on Monday, know that they need just six more points to secure a top four finish. With two more home games still to come they will be confident of getting over the line and getting the job done.

They are unbeaten at home in all competitions since September and have won each of their last four home games without conceding a single goal. They are a tough nut to crack on their own patch and those two remaining home fixtures should see them home and hosed, though a good result at Bournemouth next weekend would not go amiss.
