Manchester United's Luke Shaw explains new England role

Manchester United's Luke Shaw has said he will give younger players in the England squad any advice he can. Although Shaw was a key player for England at Euro 2020, he struggled and lost his form last season, which cast doubt over whether he would retain that status, but he's been called up to the squad again after a strong start to the campaign.

After losing his starting place to Tyrell Malacia, the left-back has won back his position in Erik ten Hag's starting lineup and his performances have been rewarded with a call-up to the England squad for the Qatar World Cup.

Shaw is the only natural left-back in the squad and he's expected to start in the majority of England's matches at the tournament. This is also the 27-year-old's second World Cup, which means he's keen to pass on his experience to players in a leadership role.

"It's strange to feel like one of the older players because when I was growing up I always felt like I was one of the young ones in the camp. Obviously now, I still feel young, but the experience we've got is vital I think," Shaw told England's YouTube channel.

"I still like to feel young and hang around with the younger ones, but it's nice and if I can give that experience off to the younger players or new players, then obviously I will help them in any way.

"I think the more experienced players in 2014 (Shaw's last World Cup) were Stevie G and Lampard. They were really good with me and I got on really well with Ross Barkley at that tournament, so we had a really good bond there.

"Being experienced now, it's always nice to look out for the young ones. It was so unexpected [2014], I don't think I expected to go to a World Cup that soon. I don't think I was long off making my debut for England and Southampton at the time.

"I knew I wasn't going to play, but I knew it was going to massive experience to be around the squad, the big names we had in the camp, the experience, to get a taste of what it was like. It was unbelievable for the experience."
