Manchester United star David de Gea has admitted that he would see himself as being a holding midfielder if he was not a goalkeeper.
The Spaniard, who was left out of the latest Spain squad for not suiting their style of having a goalkeeper that is comfortable with the ball at his feet, has made the admission during a supporters' Q&A session. De Gea, who has, arguably, been United's best player this season, has developed into being one of the finest shot-stoppers in European football in recent years.
Joining the Reds in 2011 from Atletico Madrid, the 31-year-old has gone from strength-to-strength, particularly this season, producing a string of fine performances. He has showcased his shot-stopping ability on multiple occasions and has been key in keeping United's hopes of a top-four finish alive.

However, De Gea has been often criticised for not being the most accomplished goalkeeper with the ball at his feet. Nevertheless, he has admitted that he would like to play as a holding midfielder if he was tasked with becoming an outfield player.
"When I was young, I used to play outfield as well," De Gea told United's club website. "Not just as a 'keeper.
"So which position I would like to play if I was an outfielder? I'm not sure but probably midfield.
"A no.6 trying to take the ball and make some good passes. Yes, a holding midfielder, having the ball and trying to make the team play better."
Considering De Gea was recently omitted from the latest Spain squad for not being suitable for their style of play and playing the ball out from the back, his admission about his dream outfield role may come as a surprise to most. He has not played for his country since a 1-0 win over Ukraine in October 2020 and his international career appears to be dead in the water after Brentford goalkeeper David Raya was named in the squad in his place.
Explaining why Raya had been included in the squad for the first time, Spain boss Luis Enrique said: "It is part of the tracing we do with the goalkeepers. He is a player who is doing very well.
"I really want to see it in the context of the selection. He has the necessary profile to play with us."
