Manchester United's competition to sign new goalkeeper this summer made clear

Manchester United could be rivalled by several Premier League teams in their reported pursuit of Brentford goalkeeper David Raya.

The Spain international has been a pivotal part of the Bees side that launched a surprise challenge for a European place this season. Raya, 27, was ever-present this season and kept an impressive 12 clean sheets as Thomas Frank’s side finished ninth.

United are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer, with David De Gea expected to play a lesser role next season if he does sign a new contract at Old trafford. When Erik ten Hag was asked if he believed De Gea would extend his 12 years at the club, the manager replied, "Yes, but I will not say he'll always be my No.1 because in a club like Man United there must be competition in all positions.”

Raya has turned down multiple contract offers from the Bees and has one year remaining on his deal, leading Brentford boss Frank to slap a £40m price tag on the shot-stopper. When asked about his ambitions in February, Raya gave a clear answer: “I want to play in Europe and I want to fight to win a title,” he said. “I want to fight to win a European title. I trust myself to be able to play in those types of games.”

According to bookmaker bet365, United are second favourites to sign the Spain international at 4/1. However, it is Tottenham Hotspur who are tipped to be leading the race for his signature at 5/4 as Spurs look to replace their long-standing number one Hugo Lloris.

Meanwhile, the betting company regards the chances of Raya sticking with Brentford beyond the summer window at 4/1. Chelsea are listed as slight outsiders at 8/1, where Raya could possibly compete with compatriot Kepa Arrizabalaga.

United have also been linked with a potential move for Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa this summer. However, the Portugal international recently dismissed speculation of a move to Old Trafford: "What they say is what they say, there is nothing concrete, I have a contract until 2027 and I hope to continue, let’s see."
