Manchester United's Alex Telles and Fred open up on their off-field connection

Manchester United's Brazilian pair Alex Telles and Fred have opened up on their friendship.

The pair have been teammates at Old Trafford since Telles joined the club in 2020 and their friendship has blossomed since. Fred and Telles also share the field on the international stage too, with both in the squad for this week's World Cup qualifiers.

Fred began his international career in 2014 and has made 25 appearances for the Samba Boys while Telles is a relative newcomer to the Brazilian national team with just five caps to his name. Their shared culture and home country has helped the pair to become closer.

Speaking to the club's website, they spoke about their friendship. Telles began: "We’re always together here and with the Seleção in Brazil.

"We feel really good and at ease. We have this joyful spirit. I think it’s a Brazilian thing, especially when we meet people like us, people who enjoy a laugh and a joke. It’s really important to be always laughing, it lightens the mood.

"And it’s impossible to keep a straight face being with this guy right here every day. We get on really well."

Fred added: "I think the fun is really important in our day-to-day work. If you go to work feeling down, you won’t have the type of day you want.

"I bring the laughter with me every day, all the time so we can work well, and that’s important."

When asked firstly about Telles' hometown of Caxias do Sul, Fred explained that he had only been there for football. "I’ve only been there to play a match [for Internacional]," he explained.

"I’ve never been to visit Alex. He’s invited me there for a barbecue, next holidays I’ll be there for sure."

"I’ll hold you to that. It’s in the diary," Telles responded.

As talk turned to Fred's hometown of Belo Horizonte, Telles joked that he had not yet been invited. "I’ll be there, just waiting for the invitation," he laughed.

"You’re invited bro, invitation received," Fred replied before Telles added: "Accepted. I’m not bringing anything, though."
