Manchester United remove two players from first team squad list as David de Gea still included

David de Gea remains on Manchester United’s website squad list despite the removal of all other players who are out of contract this summer.

Meanwhile, loanees Marcel Sabitzer and Wout Weghorst are still included although United tonight said in an update that both "are due to return to Bayern Munich and Burnley, respectively". United do not intend to make Burnley striker Weghorst’s move permanent while Sabitzer’s future is yet to be decided after ending the season with a knee injury.

De Gea becomes a free agent on Saturday after 12 years of service to United. The Reds are set to continue discussions with him after the expiry - he gets married on Saturday and United sources say they do not want to interrupt De Gea's private time with his family and will reopen dialogue face-to-face.

And so, Erik ten Hag is searching for a new No.1. This comes after he refused to confirm De Gea as his first-choice ‘keeper towards the end of last season following a number of costly mistakes, despite his Premier League Golden Glove award.

The 32-year-old still remains on United’s website squad list despite the removal of Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe, who leave upon the expiry of their deals this summer.

As well as De Gea, the wider goalkeeping situation remains unclear. Dean Henderson looks set to join Nottingham Forest on a permanent deal and that leaves 36-year-old Tom Heaton, whose year-long contract extension was triggered earlier this month, although wants regular game time. Nathan Bishop and Matej Kovar are listed as part of the Under-21 squad.

Elsewhere, Sabitzer continues his rehabilitation from his knee injury in liaison with parent club Bayern Munich. It’s not known whether the imminent signing of Mason Mount will impact a transfer decision on the Austrian.

Neither Weghorst and Sabitzer’s names are available for back-of-shirt printing on United’s new home strip through the club shop. De Gea’s still is a print option for the goalkeeper strip.
