Manchester United recall youngster from Salford City loan spell

Manchester United have recalled youngster D'Mani Mellor from his loan spell at Salford City, the League Two club have confirmed.

Mellor joined the Ammies on loan back in August and saw his time at the Peninsula Stadium dictated by injury woes, limiting him to just three appearances, including one on the day he signed for the club.

The 21-year-old, who has one first-team appearance for United to his name, was sidelined between September and January — meaning his temporary stint with the League Two club did not worked out how anyone would have hoped for.

A short statement on Salford's Instagram page read: "D'Mani Mellor has been recalled from his loan spell by Manchester United.

"Thank you for your efforts and all the best in the future D’Mani."

Prior to joining Salford last summer, Mellor had worked his way back into United's Under-23s squad following a serious ACL injury in August 2020, which forced him to undergo two operations.

All three of Mellor's Salford appearances were from the substitutes bench, meaning the striker earned just 20 minutes worth of football in his first loan spell away from Old Trafford.

Mellor's return to United coincides with Salford's successful attempt to strengthen their attacking options on Wednesday morning with the signing of Millwall striker Matt Smith on a permanent deal.

The youngster's return to the club will mean that he will link-up with Neil Wood's Under-23s squad, in which he scored one goal and grabbed one assist in three Premier League 2 appearances at the start of the season, prior to his temporary switch to Salford.
