Manchester United promote academy players to training squad ahead of Aston Villa tie

Manchester United youngster Di'Shon Bernard has been training with the first team ahead of the League Cup meeting with Aston Villa later this week. United will be hoping to get immediate revenge against Unai Emery's side when they return to action at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

The 22-year-old Bernard is yet to feature for the club at any level this season but was named on the bench as the U21s lost 6-1 against Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

Bernard was due to leave United on loan in the summer but saw any hopes of that dashed when he sustained an injury in pre-season.

INTERVIEW: Bernard spoke to the MEN last season

The former Chelsea youngster is now looking to get back to fitness before any firm decision is made on his future, though he could be a candidate to leave on loan in the January window.

Bernard made 28 appearances on loan at Championship side Hull City last season, and has more Football League experience from a loan spell at Salford the year prior.

The young centre-back has only made one senior appearance in his five years at United, scoring an own goal in defeat to Astana back in November 2019.

Fellow U21 players Noam Emeran and Shola Shoretire also took part in the session.
