David de Gea
Despite the odd lapse, De Gea has been in matchwinning form on a couple of key occasions for United but his kicking has got worse amid greater scrutiny. 7
Diogo Dalot
Dalot was one of the best right-backs in Europe in the first half of the season but he has failed to regain form since sustaining a hamstring injury in Portugal's World Cup defeat to Morocco. 7
Aaron Wan-Bissaka
The first four months of the campaign were a write-off for Wan-Bissaka but he has had a decent run since returning to the United side in December and he has developed an unlikely alliance with Antony. 6

Raphael Varane
United's resurgence started with Varane's recall against Liverpool. His performance level is consistently excellent and after big games he often leaves the pitch as one of the most impressive performers. 9
Lisandro Martinez
One of the signings of the season. Martinez has hardly looked back since the Brentford debacle and his height that mattered that day has not since. Almost as much of an asset in attack as he is in defence with his passing. 9
Victor Lindelof
He has had limited playing opportunities with Varane more durable this term but Lindelof has performed decently more often than not when called upon. 6
Harry Maguire
Has not had the opportunity to recover from the chastening start to the season. Maguire seldom starts for United and a good World Cup has done little to boost his stock at club level. 4
Luke Shaw
Although still prone to the odd egregious performance (Brentford away, Liverpool away), Shaw has had a quietly good season and improved under Erik ten Hag. Arguably the best left-back in the league this term. 8
Tyrell Malacia
Has struggled to reach the level of his purple patch in August and September and very much the back-up left-back to Shaw. Still a work in progress. 6
Casemiro
The best defensive midfielder in the world is also one of the best attacking midfielders. Casemiro's passing is as piercing as Paul Scholes' and he has the steel of Roy Keane. Possibly United's most pivotal player. 9
Christian Eriksen
A shrewd signing, considering he was not attached to a club, Eriksen excelled in a deep-lying creative role before his season was abruptly halted by the human wrecking ball Andy Carroll. 8
Fred
Fred has been used more sparingly - and more effectively - by Ten Hag and produced excellent individual performances against Tottenham, Manchester City and Barcelona. 7
Scott McTominay
Although integral to United's first winning run, he was brutally exposed at Manchester City and has failed to regain a first-team role since. It is also unclear whether Ten Hag regards McTominay as a defensive or attack-minded midfielder. 5
Marcel Sabitzer
A wily deadline day addition on loan, Sabitzer was thrown in at the deep end but has done okay and his energy in the League Cup final helped take the game away from Newcastle. 6
Antony
There have been some great goals and some vital goals but the Brazilian can be a flaky performer and, like Malacia, he is a work in progress. 6
Jadon Sancho
Taken out of the firing line for nearly four months to improve his fitness and mental well-being, Sancho is still sporadically effective and is currently better off the bench. 5
Bruno Fernandes
He has had more flattering numbers in past seasons but Fernandes has become a better footballer this season and captained United impressively, bar at Anfield. Also tends to have an impact despite being played out of position. 8
Alejandro Garnacho
The year 2022 was an annus mirabilis for Garnacho and even Ten Hag did not expect him to be such a prominent member of the United squad. For an 18-year-old who started at Barrow in the EFL Trophy in October, this season has been a major success so far. 8
Marcus Rashford
Rashford was in decent form going into the World Cup and has returned to produce career-best and world-class form. Seems destined to become the first United player since Robin van Persie to break the 30-goal barrier in a season. 9
Anthony Elanga
It's easy to forget Elanga is still in the United squad. He always puts in a shift but struggles to put the ball in the back of the net. Elanga hasn't scored for United since February 22 last year. 4
Anthony Martial
On the rare occasion he did play in the first months of the season, he almost always had an impact. But Martial has become more brittle and he has played in only 14 of United's 46 games. 4
Wout Weghorst
Essentially fails to fulfil the role he was bought for (goalscorer) and Ten Hag has had to play him further from goal for Weghorst to have any remote impact. 4
