Manchester United player ratings vs Brighton: Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Victor Lindelof good

David de Gea

Palmed away Alexis Mac Allister's early free-kick and made good saves from Julio Enciso and Solly March. Struggled in the penalty shootout. 7

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Got a good sliding tackle in on Kaoru Mitoma and improved in the final third after the pause. Embarked on one spirited dribble. 7

Victor Lindelof

Looked more comfortable on the right side of defence and got stronger as the game went on in a new partnership with Shaw. Scored winning penalty. 7

Luke Shaw

Comforted a mascot in the tunnel and his presence at centre half was of comfort to United. Slotted in seamlessly. 7

Diogo Dalot

Had the benefit of not being pitted against Mitoma and Brighton rarely capitalised when they had an overload. Intervened to thwart Deniz Undav. 6

Casemiro

Booked for an overzealous tackle and encountered a testing midfield in Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo. 6

Christian Eriksen

Set up a chance for Fernandes and had a go at goal late in the first half but this was another leggy performance and he made way for Fred. 5

Bruno Fernandes

Put himself about and had United's first major attempt at goal. Involved in the bulk of attacks but did not always make the right decision. 6

Antony

Occasionally lively on the ball and his work off it was more useful than it appeared. Drew a routine save from Robert Sanchez. 6

Marcus Rashford

Did little in the first half until he found Eriksen in added time and his biggest contribution in the second was to earn a free-kick. Superbly denied by Sanchez in extra-time. 6

Anthony Martial

Wearing gloves with the temperature at 13 degrees, he was a passenger and only lasted as long as he did as the alternative was Wout Weghorst. 3

Subs

Fred

Energised United and was a presence at both ends. 6

Jadon Sancho

Involved quickly with a shot that curled wide. Produced the best piece of play from a United forward to cross for Marcel Sabitzer. 6

Marcel Sabitzer

Saw a header go wide. Scored penalty. 6

Tyrell Malacia

Loose with the ball. 5

Wout Weghorst

A committed cameo. 6

Manager

Made the right call by playing Wan-Bissaka at right-back against Mitoma. Fred reenergised United and Sancho was creative at times. Hooking key dead-ball strikers with a shootout likely was always a risk. 6
