Manchester United player ratings vs Tottenham: Fred and Raphael Varane excellent

David de Gea

His distribution was much better than against Newcastle and instigated some incisive attacks. His save from the offside Harry Kane eventually led to the second goal. 7

Diogo Dalot

An improved performance after some jaded outings. Encountered Ivan Perisic authoritatively and supplemented attacks on an impressive night. 8

Raphael Varane

Against one of the world's best strikers, Varane showed why he is one of the world's best defenders. Barely put a foot wrong. 8

Lisandro Martinez

Relished the Anglo-Argentine duel and his reading of the game was expert. Kane had little joy against the uncompromising centre-back. 8

Luke Shaw

His best performance in red for some time. Denied by Hugo Lloris on the volley and, like Dalot, was a frequent outlet in the final third. 8

Casemiro

He and Fred looked like a Brazil-standard midfield against Spurs's trio. They dominated proactively, with Casemiro deeper and Fred the creator. 7

Fred

As brilliant as he was bad on Sunday. Fred passing pierced Tottenham's midfield and defence and he was the one who breached Hugo Lloris. Perhaps the zenith of his United career. 9

Antony

His most crowdpleasing and productive performance against a tentative Tottenham defence. Unsettled Spurs with his imaginative play and hit the post. 7

Bruno Fernandes

In sync with the attacks and wasteful again at times but regained the ball to instigate the breakaway Fred finished. Then Fernandes finished fabulously. 7

Jadon Sancho

Too quiet again in the first-half but had an early impact after the restart to tee up Fred for the breakthrough. Not involved enough. 6

Marcus Rashford

Should have buried the standout chance of the first-half and did brilliantly to create a chance early in the second but well denied by Lloris. Was foiled by the Frenchman a third time. 7

Subs

Scott McTominay

Came on to guard United's 2-0 advantage. 6

Anthony Elanga

Late appearance. 6

Christian Eriksen

Nice cameo. 6

Manager

Boldly retained Fred and dropped Ronaldo and both calls were completely vindicated, despite United's low conversion rate. 8
