Manchester United player of the year bash scrapped as humiliated stars ask to pull the plug

Manchester United have binned their annual Player of the Year dinner after a request from humiliated players.

The black-tie event has been a staple of the club's calendar for over a decade but will not go ahead for the third year running after the their worst-ever Premier League season.

The Mirror report Old Trafford stars "felt awkward" staging the glamorous bash after such a dreadful campaign.

United were unable to hold the event in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19 restrictions and were planning for a return an in-person presentation, which would have been broadcast on MUTV.

But players are said to be too embarrassed to hold the party and asked for the plug to be pulled.

An awful year under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and then interim manager Ralf Rangnick will end with United set to post their worst-ever Premier League points total when the season ends on Sunday.

They've watched on as arch-rivals Manchester City and Liverpool battle for the title in another thrilling race to the finish.

An ailing Solskjaer was axed in November and replaced by Rangnick on an interim basis, but the German's tenure has proven just as calamitous.

All that has been played out against a backdrop of seething animosity from furious United fans, who have held several protests against the club's American owners the Glazers.

The event is normally one of the biggest on the United calendar and is attended by a host of the club's biggest names, including legendary former boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Bruno Fernandes has been named the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for the past two years, while Luke Shaw was named United Players' Player of the Year last season.

United have still run a poll with fans for them to vote for their Player of the Year and are working on a plan of how to present the award to the subsequent winner.

The Red Devils finish the season on Sunday with a trip to Crystal Palace, needing a win to secure sixth spot and a Europa League place, to avoid dropping into the Europa Conference League.

New boss Erik ten Hag will be at Selhurst Park to watch United, before officially starting his United tenure on Monday.
