Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick sends message to Cristiano Ronaldo over goalscoring drought

Ralf Rangnick admits Cristiano Ronaldo should be scoring more goals for Manchester United but said the blame should be levelled at all of the forwards.

Ronaldo has not scored in any of his last five appearances and was last on the scoresheet against Burnley on January 30. He was dropped at Burnley on Tuesday night in favour of the returning Edinson Cavani as United drew 1-1 for the second game running.

United have scored three goals in their last three games and have only scored more than once in just three matches since Rangnick took over on December 2.

Southampton visit Old Trafford on Saturday and Rangnick is desperate for United to arrest their recent form of dominating first-halves only to end up drawing the game due to their wasteful finishing.

"It's not only about Cristiano Ronaldo," Rangnick said. "He should score more goals, it's obvious, I think we are creating enough chances and enough opportunities in the last couple of games but we just didn't score enough goals, but this is not only an issue with Cristiano, it's an issue with the other players, especially the offensive players. We don't score enough goals.

"If you bear in mind how many chances we create, and this is also something that needs to get better in the next couple of weeks. At Burnley, in 70 of those 90 minutes, it was very, very, very close to the game plan we spoke before the game and now it's about rewarding ourselves and also getting the results we should deserve."

Southampton beat Tottenham in midweek and have an impressive record, despite last season's 9-0 abberation when two of their players were sent off.

"We are fully aware this will be a difficult one," Rangnick added. "Obviously, I watched the game at Spurs during the week and they really deserved to win. They tactically played at a very high level and this will be a challenge for us, but I'm sure we'll be up for that challenge.

"We'll prepare the game today for tomorrow's game and we have to win the game, that's for sure. We did well in both first-halves against Middlesbrough and Burnley, but we need top performances from the whole game against Southampton and Brighton.

"I've known [Hassenhuttl] for six or seven years, he has developed in those years, it's obvious. You can see what he did with Southampton, he also did a great job at Leipzig, finishing second in the first year of the Bundesliga and sixth in the second year. What he's achieved at Southampton is great, just great. Excellent coach."
