Erik ten Hag's preference is to sign another attacker as Manchester United hold discussions over Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund.
Ten Hag wants an out-and-out striker and a forward who can play across the front three amid doubts over the futures of a number of United attackers.
Hojlund, 20, is United's principal No.9 target after they were discouraged from bidding for Tottenham talisman Harry Kane and the club's football director John Murtough has held extensive talks with Atalanta.
Atalanta have shown interest in signing Mason Greenwood on loan and that has been brought up in discussions with Murtough.

It is understood United are monitoring Kane's situation should Spurs chairman Daniel Levy suddenly become receptive to selling him to a Premier League club. Bayern Munich have already had a £65million bid rejected for Kane.
Kane, who turns 30 this month, has entered the last year of his Tottenham contract and the club is prepared to offer him a salary hike nearing £300,000-a-week.
Eintracht Frankfurt goalscorer Randal Kolo Muani is regarded as an alternative and attainable option to Hojlund by United. The 24-year-old, like Hojlund, is under contract until 2027.
The Manchester Evening News revealed in March United had shortlisted Hojlund and Muani as they anticipated issues with a possible pursuit of Kane.
United are prepared to sell winger Anthony Elanga for £10million and would listen for offers for Anthony Martial and Donny van de Beek while Ten Hag has grown impatient with Jadon Sancho.
