Manchester United linked midfielder poised for 'new club' as transfer hint dropped

Morocco boss Walid Regragui has said midfielder Sofyan Amrabat will be joining a new club soon amid prior interest from Manchester United.

Amrabat's brother Nordin confirmed in March United had contacted the Morocco international regarding a move to Old Trafford. In January, Erik ten Hag was seeking a midfielder to replace the injured Christian Eriksen.

However, United ended up signing Marcel Sabitzer on loan for the remainder of the campaign from Bayern Munich. The Austrian has now headed back to the Bavarian side and is not thought to be wanted at Old Trafford next season.

United are seeking to strengthen their central midfield options ahead of the 2023/24 season. The Reds are interested in Mason Mount and have agreed personal terms with the England midfielder over a potential move, but have not yet reached an agreement with Chelsea over a transfer fee.

Morocco international Amrabat has been at Italian side Fiorentina since 2020. In that time, he has racked up more than 100 appearances for the Serie A outfit.

The 26-year-old's last appearance for Fiorentina was in the Europa Conference League final loss to West Ham United earlier this month. Amrabat's contract at the club runs until next summer, with the option of a further 12 months.

Amrabat has already admitted he would welcome the prospect of playing in the Premier League one day, though whether that is at United remains to be seen. But Atlas Lions boss Regragui explained he has has sent the midfielder home from international duty due to an impending move.

“I decided to let him go, he won’t play,” the manager said, according to CalcioMercato. “He’s played a lot of games this year, I wouldn’t want to risk that, especially as he’ll be signing with a new club soon.”
