Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney favourite to replace Frank Lampard as Everton manager

After Everton's 4-1 loss to Brighton on Tuesday night, many fans are questioning the future of manager Frank Lampard at Goodison Park.

After narrowly avoiding a trip to the Championship last season, Everton currently sit just above the relegation places in 16th, one point ahead of Nottingham Forest. However, it should be noted that Steve Cooper's side have a game in hand on the Toffees.

Fans were already calling for change after Everton's defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing Day and for many this most recent loss to Brighton is the final nail in the coffin. Their last win came in October, 11 matches ago.

Five managers have been sacked in the Premier League so far and a loss to Manchester United could see Lampard added to the list of casualties. But if the former Chelsea midfielder leaves Goodison Park, who will replace him?

According to Betfair, former United striker Wayne Rooney is the favourite to replace Lampard in the dugout. The current DC United manager is down 11/8 to replace his former England teammate.

Rooney, who started his career at Everton, was linked with the job back when Rafa Benitez was sacked but it ultimately ended up going to Lampard. The former United favourite has only managed two clubs so far, but earned plaudits for his time at Derby where he narrowly failed to escape relegation despite a 21 point reduction at the start of the season.

Former Everton managers Roberto Martinez and David Moyes feature prominently in the betting too. Sean Dyche, who is currently unemployed after leaving Burnley, has also been linked with the position.

Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: “Frank Lampard is now odds-on at 1/3 to be the next Premier League manager to leave their role following Tuesday night’s 4-1 home thrashing by Brighton. Former Toffees forward Wayne Rooney is the 11/8 frontrunner to replace Lampard, who had been 9/4 to go before the humiliating defeat. Other contenders for the Goodison Park job include Sean Dyche at 5/1, with David Moyes 6/1 and Roberto Martinez 7/1.”
