Manchester United issue David de Gea contract update

Manchester United remain in discussions over a potential new contract with David de Gea after he was not named on their retained list.

De Gea is technically out of contract this summer but has not been listed as one of the seven players that will be released by the club upon the expiration of their current deals.

United confirmed their retained list on Friday afternoon and stated that 'discussions remain open' with the Spaniard 'over a potential new contract.'

The 32-year-old only has two weeks left on his current deal, and although the terms of a new agreement are thought to be roughly in place, an extension is yet to be signed as United explore their options.

There is fresh speculation surrounding De Gea's future after a disappointing end to the campaign, and while Erik ten Hag has said he wants to keep the 32-year-old, he has offered no assurances that he will remain No. 1 into next season and beyond.

United are interested in Anderlecht goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, but the 20-year-old is now close to a move to Brighton in this transfer window.

If De Gea does depart, then a more experienced first-choice will be required. United have been linked with both Inter Milan's Andre Onana and Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa.

United also confirmed they have triggered one-year extensions for backup 'keepers Tom Heaton and Nathan Bishop, amid continued uncertainty surrounding the department.
