Manchester United 'identify' David de Gea replacement and more transfer rumours

Manchester United have added Mike Maignan to their shopping list for next summer - according to reports.

While the club do hold an option on David de Gea, with the long-serving Spaniard into the final 12 months of his contract, several players have already been mooted as potential successors for the gloves. Meanwhile, their own Academy graduate Dean Henderson is currently enjoying a season-long loan at Nottingham Forest.

Erik ten Hag made several high-profile signings during his first window in charge including Martin Dubravka, who arrived on loan to offset Henderson moving elsewhere. But has the Dutchman finally settled on a 'number one' to stand between the posts moving forward?

Italian publication Calciostyle suggest United want to sign AC Milan stopper Maignan and the Frenchman is, also, understood to be keen on a move to the Premier League. Tottenham are viewed as potential suitors, as well, with question marks over Hugo Lloris and his future with the north Londoners.

Elsewhere, reports from Italy claim United have settled on Lautaro Martinez as their 'preferred' Cristiano Ronaldo replacement. Speculation over Ronaldo and his Old Trafford future remains at fever pitch after the ex-Real Madrid and Juventus superstar was omitted from their matchday squad against Chelsea.

With no takers for Ronaldo in the summer, the 37-year-old was forced to stay put at United, even though he had expressed a desire to leave. But will he eventually move on in January?

Expected to wait until next season before filling his place in the squad, Ten Hag is reported to admire Martinez as the Premier League giants plot a swoop for the Inter Milan striker next summer. Gazzetta dello Sport credit United with interest in his signature and say initial contact has already been made for the Argentine.

Martinez, 25, has scored 64 goals in 146 league games for the Italian side. His contract there expires in 2026.
