Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is set for a shock return to the MLS to take charge of former club D.C United, less than a month after leaving Derby County.
According to a report by The Athletic, Rooney has agreed terms with his former club to return the US and become their new manager. The former England international spent two years playing for D.C, scoring 25 goals in 52 appearances between 2018 and 2020.
It has been claimed that the United icon has been in talks with the US outfit for "weeks." He made the decision to quit as Derby boss last month following a turbulent 18 months at the helm.

The Rams were relegated from the Championship under his stewardship last season, with the club being slapped with a 21-point deduction because of off-field issues. The club's future was hanging in the balance up until recently, with the collapse of Chris Kirchner's takeover bid proving to be the final straw for Rooney.
Derby, however, have since been saved from going under, with businessman David Clowes coming to their rescue, successfully completing his takeover of the club just over a week ago. They are now aiming for an immediate return to the Championship this coming season.
Rooney, however, looks set to land his second managerial post of his career, returning to his former stomping ground. The former striker, who served as captain during his time as a player at D.C, looks set to inherit a club in desperate need of help and improvement. They currently find themselves 13th in the MLS' Eastern Conference and have lost four of their last six matches, including a 7-0 thumping at the hands of Philadelphia on Saturday.
D.C are currently under the stewardship of caretaker head coach Chad Ashton after former boss Hernan Losada left the club earlier this year. Ashton was expected to take the club through to the end of the season, but the prospect of Rooney taking charge could change that.
