Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea suffers another Spain snub as he's left out of squad

David de Gea has suffered yet another snub from the Spanish national team after not being named in their latest squad.

Manchester United may have endured a terrible season, which finally came to a merciful end on Sunday, but De Gea is one of the few players to have enjoyed an excellent campaign. Only Cristiano Ronaldo, who bagged an impressive 24 goals, is likely to beat him to any Player of the Season award.

Only Leeds' Illan Meslier and Leicester captain Kasper Schmeichel made more saves than De Ge in the league last season (128). United finished the campaign in sixth place on 58 points, their lowest ever tally in the Premier League era.

However, despite his heroics between the sticks, De Gea hasn't earned a recall to the Spain team. Instead, first-choice Unai Simon, Brighton's Robert Sanchez and Brentford's David Raya have all been selected.

The Nations League gets underway next month and La Roja have fixtures against Portugal, Switzerland and two matches with the Czech Republic coming up. But instead of being involved, De Gea will be able to rest and recuperate before reporting for pre-season at Carrington.

De Gea has 45 caps for Spain but hasn't played for his country since October 2020 and hasn't been in a squad since November 2021 after being left out for the March internationals. At the time, Luis Enrique hinted that the 31-year-old had been left out as he doesn't suit his side's style of play.

"It is part of the tracing we do with the goalkeepers," said Enrique, explaining why he had awarded Raya his first call-up. "He is a player who is doing very well.

"I really want to see it in the context of the selection. He has the necessary profile to play with us."
