Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea sends Juan Mata message after title win

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has shared his admiration for former teammate Juan Mata.

The ex-United playmaker got his hands on silverware only 12 months after leaving Old Trafford when helping Galatasaray win the Super Lig trophy. It was their first success in the competition since 2019 and the crowning moment came with a 4-1 victory over Ankaragucu on Tuesday night.

Spanish veteran Mata was an unused substitute in that game and has played a bit-part role in Turkey this season with three goals and one assist from 15 appearances, including only three starts. However, the 35-year-old is still a popular figure at United after serving the club with distinction for eight-and-a-half years.

Upon his appointment as United manager last summer, Erik ten Hag wanted to keep Mata at Old Trafford and the club were prepared to offer him one last playing contract before easing him into an administrative role - but Mata hoped to continue playing regularly.

It hasn't quite played out that way for the Spaniard personally, but the season ended in glory nonetheless as Mata and his Galatasaray teammates continue to celebrate their title win. As the dust continues to settle on that success, the former United favourite took to social media to share a short message to his followers.

Uploading several images from Tuesday night - and the glittering trophy parade that followed - Mata added a short caption: "Unforgettable night." His post featured love heart, trophy and lion emojis.

Needless to say, Mata has garnered thousands of likes and comments, while United goalkeeper De Gea was among the first to reply to his ex-teammate. In the comments section, he posted the heart eyes and party emojis.

Mata signed a one-year contract with Galatasaray when leaving United last summer and the club do hold an option on him. However, given his bit-part role this term, he might push for another move this summer.
