Manchester United given fresh Donny van de Beek injury boost

Donny van de Beek was seen going through ball exercises in Manchester United training on Monday as he continues his recovery from a season-ending knee injury.

The Dutchman played only 10 times, just four of them starts, before having to undergo surgery having suffered a setback injury in January’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth, United’s first game of 2023.

Van de Beek began gym work in March before taking to the Carrington grass for individual training earlier this month. The 26-year-old has now been seen completing drills with the ball during a one-to-one session.

The former Ajax star will not be available for Saturday's FA Cup final against Manchester City, but Erik ten Hag hopes to have him back in time for pre-season. Van de Beek still has two years remaining on his deal.

His future at the club is unclear with United expected to offload players in order to facilitate arrivals this summer. Van de Beek, who cost United £35m in 2020, has just two goals and two assists in 60 outings for the Reds, albeit only 23 of those have been starts.

Several players are enjoying their last week at United. Wout Weghorst is set to return to Burnley after Ten Hag decided not to make his loan move permanent, while debut-less goalkeeper Jack Butland is due to leave with his Crystal Palace contract also expiring next month. Both were spotted in training on Monday, unlike Bayern Munich loanee Marcel Sabitzer who is out of the trip to Wembley after suffering a knee injury earlier this month.

Meanwhile, a beaming Benni McCarthy watched on as the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Luke Shaw and Facundo Pellistri took part in a game of rondo. Anthony Elanga and Brandon Williams - who both could be loaned out this summer - also joined in.
