Manchester United are still in discussions with Barcelona over a potential deal for Frenkie de Jong.
The Manchester Evening News understands that the midfielder is Erik ten Hag’s primary target with the club in dire need of a midfielders revamp.
According to reports, Barcelona are demanding north of £70m for the playmaker despite their willingness to offload him. The Spanish giants are looking to sell some of their key players this summer in order to manoeuvre within La Liga’s financial rules amid their huge debts.

It has encouraged United to further pursue De Jong, and club legend Gary Pallister believes he would be a good fit. He outlined four points that indicate he would be suited to his former employers.
“Hopefully they can get that deal done, De Jong is at the right age, has plenty of experience and is the type of player that can really express himself at a place like United,” he told the Metro.
“He is used to the pressure and the spotlight having been at Barcelona so he would certainly tick a box.” Pallister added that Barcelona still will try to squeeze as much out of United as possible despite their financial troubles.
He added: “Barcelona know how desperate United are to bring in players. They are going to push to the nth degree to get whatever money they can and that is the case whenever United come knocking. They are still seen as one of the richest clubs in the world.”
