Manchester United give team news vs Tottenham and Bruno Fernandes injury update

Bruno Fernandes is a doubt for Manchester United's Premier League trip to Tottenham on Thursday night.

Fernandes sustained an injury to his right ankle in the first half of the FA Cup semi-final with Brighton but played out the full 90 minutes before withdrawing ahead of extra time. Fernandes was pictured at home with his ankle in a support brace and propped up on cushions, with crutches and a protective boot also visible.

The Portuguese was spotted at United's Carrington training complex walking without crutches and a protective boot but Erik ten Hag admits Fernandes is a "question mark".

"There are some unavailable - Martinez, Varane," Ten Hag said. "We have to see how Bruno Fernandes is, we don't know yet. Is a question mark. But I think for the rest, we are quite okay.

"It's more often that players, we protect them, prevention but it has to settle down. We have seen he played a full game and it happened in the first half. But tomorrow is quick, we have to see what is possible."

Fernandes has never missed a United match through injury. He was unwell when United beat Tottenham 3-2 last year.

United dropped to fourth in the Premier League table at the weekend as Newcastle thrashed Tottenham 6-1 to rise to third but United have a game in hand on Newcastle and two games in hand on Spurs.

Tottenham trail United by six points and sacked caretaker manager Cristian Stellini on Monday. Ryan Mason has been placed in temporary charge for the second time, having taken over for the remainder of the season when Jose Mourinho was dismissed two years ago.

United were thumped 7-0 at Anfield after Liverpool had conceded five goals to Real Madrid the previous week. Ten Hag warned the egregious defeat at St James' Park can be "fuel" for Spurs.

"It's obvious they had a really bad defeat," Ten Hag added. "Of course, they are mad, that can be fuel for bouncing back. It's about us, an opponent can never be more hungry than us. That is how we have to prepare the game and make sure we go front foot, be dominant and dictate the game."
