Manchester United give positive Anthony Martial injury update

Anthony Martial is back on the training pitch for Manchester United but is yet to return to team training after sustaining a back injury earlier this month.

Martial was withdrawn during the first half of the Premier League win at Everton. The forward appeared to be struggling with the ailment in the warm-up but lined up at Goodison Park anyway, only to be withdrawn before half-time.

United have been without Martial for the vast majority of the season due to three separate injuries and it is unclear whether he will return before the season pauses for the World Cup.

Speaking to club media, Ten Hag said of Martial: “He's improving. He's back on the [training] pitch, not in the group so we have to wait for that step. But hopefully he's quickly back.”

Ten Hag confirmed Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Donny van de Beek could all be in contention to feature against Omonia Nicosia at Old Trafford on Thursday night, depending on how they came through the team's final training session before the match on Wednesday after returning to team training earlier in the week.

Ten Hag added: "They are back in training and they will also be involved in today’s last training for the game for tomorrow and after training we will take the decision.”

Reflecting on United's busy October schedule and how he feels his players have handled it in a positive way, Ten Hag said: “I think it’s good. I think it shows that we can come back and we can decide games in the last minutes, which shows that the fitness levels are good. But that is an investment and you have to keep that going. It’s a responsibility for us as the staff but especially the players, to do the right things, firstly at the training ground, on the pitch and in the gym, but also the recovery and the food is really important.”
