Manchester United get Raphael Varane injury boost

Raphael Varane was only fatigued when he was substituted in the late stages of France's World Cup final defeat to Argentina.

Varane collapsed to the turf in the 23rd minute of extra-time and 113th minute of an absorbing contest that ended 3-3 before Argentina prevailed 4-2 in a penalty shootout.

Manchester United defender Varane started in all but one of France's seven games in Qatar, having recovered from an ankle injury to be named in coach Didier Deschamps' squad.

Varane overcame illness to start for France at the Lusail Stadium on Sunday and he is scheduled to have this week off before returning to United's Carrington training complex next week.

France and Argentina's progression to the World Cup final effectively rules out Varane and Lisandro Martinez from selection for the Premier League visit of Nottingham Forest on December 27. Both are definitely unavailable for the League Cup fourth round tie against Burnley on Tuesday but could return at Wolves on New Year's Eve.

United players arrived at 8.30am for training on Sunday morning and some players left at 3pm. The players have been granted a day off today and only those recovering from injury reported at Carrington. The nine United players who suffered elimination from the World Cup quarter-finals are due back tomorrow.

The Manchester Evening News revealed last week Diogo Dalot had returned early so his hamstring injury could be assessed. United captain Harry Maguire enjoyed a short vacation in Dubai after England lost to France in the last eight.

United manager Erik ten Hag is not expected to conduct a pre-match press conference for the Burnley game on Tuesday.
