Manchester United fans spot simple referee ‘mistake’ that cost them a goal vs Aston Villa

Manchester United fans have spotted a refereeing 'error' that they believe cost them a goal in the defeat to Aston Villa.

United saw a nine-game unbeaten run come crashing to a halt as Villa ran out 3-1 winners. The victory was a much-needed one for the hosts, in what was Unai Emery's first game in charge of the Midlands side.

United conceded after just seven minutes when Leon Bailey struck before Lucas Digne doubled the lead shortly after with a free-kick.

That latter goal is the one United fans have taken particular umbrage with.

It is after one fan on social media site reddit took a screengrab claiming it shows the United wall placed well over the permitted 10 yards away from the placing of the free-kick.

Alongside the image is the caption: "I'm sorry how is this ten yards?"

Many have commented to show their ire at what they perceive to be an error by referee Anthony Taylor.

One wrote: "Villa players are over 10 yards for sure as well. Our players are closer to 14/15 i think."

Another put: "As soon as I saw this 15 yard wall I knew they were gonna score."

Another said: "It's always those small detail rules that 9/10 times never occur in football, until it happens to us."

An own goal from Jacob Ramsey just before the interval gave United hope but the same player scored at the other end just after the restart and after that United never looked like coming back from another two-goal buffer.
