Manchester United fans split over Frenkie de Jong social media transfer 'signal'

Manchester United supporters have been evaluating their stance on Frenkie de Jong after his Instagram message seemed to indicate his transfer intentions.

The Netherlands international has been heavily linked with a reunion with Erik ten Hag this summer. De Jong won an Eredivisie title with the new United boss and was part of the Ajax squad that made it to the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019.

However, his social media message on Tuesday may have hinted at his transfer intentions. Speaking about Barcelona’s tough season, the midfielder - who is being valued at £75m - wrote: "It has been a disappointing season for us.

“We couldn't achieve the goals we set at the beginning. But I want to thank the fans for their support this year. We will work hard to do better next season."

Some United fans on Twitter are bayed their club to go after De Jong anyway. However, many others seemed to deem his post as a strong enough signal to United and have questioned his price tag, with one or two suggesting other alternatives.

@jpsg525: De Jong wants to stay at Barca, what’s the point in signing someone who wants to be elsewhere.

@JJOT18: De Jong's season was terrible and his price is high, plus he seems to want to stay at Barcelona.

@PenandesUnited: There goes our transfer budget.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News , United have made contact with Barcelona over the availability of De Jong this summer.
