Manchester United fans share Cody Gakpo transfer theory after Lisandro Martinez conversation

Manchester United supporters are tipping Cody Gakpo to arrive at Old Trafford during the January transfer window after spotting him chatting to Lisandro Martinez following their pulsating World Cup meeting.

Argentina and Martinez progressed through to the semi-finals with a penalty shootout win against the Netherlands and Gakpo on an intense and dramatic night at the Lusail Stadium. Goals from Nahuel Molina and Lionel Messi (pen) had put Argentina in control before Netherlands substitute, Wout Weghorst, conjured up some late heroics.

Weghorst netted twice, including one from a cleverly-worked free-kick deep into 11 minutes added time, to ensure that an extra 30 minutes would be needed. It then, ultimately, went to spot kicks.

Virgil van Dijk and Steven Berghuis saw two penalties saved by Aston Villa goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez, who was the undoubted Argentina hero after his namesake Lisandro had been replaced and forced to watch spot-kick drama unfold from his seat on the bench. But there was still one more job for the 24-year-old.

After jumping into celebrations with his Argentina teammates, Martinez broke away from the team and, as spotted by eagle-eyed United supporters on social media, made a beeline for Gakpo, who continues to attract interest from Old Trafford for his performances. Erik ten Hag wanted the player this summer.

However, for now at least, he remains at PSV as European clubs monitor his situation. But has Martinez just sold the United dream to a potential colleague in the making? It was in the summer just gone that he swapped the Eredivisie for Old Trafford and Gakpo has been backed to follow suit - as per these comments from Twitter;
