Manchester United fans react to starting line-up vs Brentford as Cristiano Ronaldo starts

Manager Erik ten Hag has named his starting line-up for Manchester United's Premier League clash with Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium this teatime, making an unexpected change.

United, who did the double over the Bees last season, will be determined to register their first victory of the campaign after last Sunday's opening day defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. The Reds found themselves 2-0 down at half-time and only managed to half the deficit after the break via an own-goal.

It means that Ten Hag will be determined to see an improvement in performance and result this teatime, as he experiences a Premier League away game for the first time. The Dutchman has decided to make just one change to the side that was beaten last weekend.

Cristiano Ronaldo has come into the side, meaning Scott McTominay has dropped out, paving the way for Christian Eriksen to start in midfield. It is Ronaldo's first competitive start for United since the 4-0 defeat to Brighton back on May 7.

Meanwhile, Raphael Varane, Tyrell Malacia and James Garner have been named among the substitutes. Centre-back Victor Lindelof and striker Anthony Matial, however, remain sidelined through injury.

Having made just one change to his side, Ten Hag will be hoping that it has the desired impact, as he goes in search of his first competitive win as Reds manager. It is Ronaldo's inclusion in the starting line-up that has attracted the most attention from United's supporters in the immediate aftermath of the team news being confirmed.

Below, MEN Sport has taken a close look at what some of United's supporters have had to say in response to Ten Hag's decision to give Ronaldo his first start of the season.

As you can see from the messages displayed in the tweets above, Ten Hag's decision to include Ronaldo in the starting line-up has come as no surprise. United lacked an attacking threat in the first-half, particularly in the first-half against Brighton and he should ease that problem.

United starting line-up: De Gea; Dalot, Maguire, Martinez, Shaw; Eriksen, Fred, Fernandes; Sancho, Ronaldo, Rashford.

Substitutes: Heaton, Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Malacia, McTominay, Garner, Van de Beek, Elanga, Garnacho.

This evening's contest at the Gtech Community Stadium gets under way at 5:30pm and you can follow all of the action on our live matchday blog, which you can access by clicking here.
