Manchester United fans rage after new angle of Casemiro red card incident emerges

Some Manchester United supporters were left perplexed after a new angle of the incident that resulted in Casemiro being sent off during Saturday's 2-1 win over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford emerged.

The Brazil international was sent off for violent conduct with 70 minutes on the clock following an altercation with Palace midfielder Will Hughes. Following a rough challenge from Jeffrey Schlupp on Antony, a melee broke out on the side of the pitch furthest from the dugout, resulting in Casemiro appearing to grab Hughes by the neck.

The incident was looked at by VAR, resulting in on-field referee Andre Marriner going over to the pitchside monitor and making the decision to show Casemiro his first red card in English football. The angle Marriner was shown did suggest that the Brazilian had his hands wrapped around Hughes' neck.

However, an alternative angle which was not shown to Marriner, looking from the side of the pitch where the incident unfolded, has shown that the United ace actually had his hands on Hughes' shirt collar rather than his neck.

United are now facing up to the prospect of going into a double-header with Leeds as well as a meeting with Leicester without Casemiro, and fans are understandably feeling frustrated.

One United supporter said: "What a f****** joke, entire f****** crowd of players fighting and VAR selectively picks this from one grainy angle and hands a red. But when it comes to other situations they'll say they don't have enough evidence to make a decision. Pathetic refs."

Another commented: "'It's not clear and obvious'. Can't wait to hear how this is clearly and obviously violent." Another posted: "This must be the first case where a player has been sent off for violent conduct and the player 'assaulted' doesn't react and then hugs his attacker."

This angle of the incident was shown on Match of the Day (BBC Spot/Match of the Day.)

A United supporter joked: "First time I've seen a man get sent off for having thick gloves." Another commented: "Of course this is the angle they didn't show the ref."

Another supporter urged the club to appeal the decision, posting: "Shambolic. That is the worst part of all of this is they only gave the referee one angle to see. VAR is so broken. Club needs to appeal the suspension." Another supporter added: "Come on, that’s not violent conduct in any way, shape or form."

United manager Erik ten Hag confirmed on Saturday that the club was considering appealing the decision.

"We have to think about [appealing]," said the United boss. "But be fair, we have seen when you're freezing (the frame), Casemiro is crossing the line. But many more players were crossing the line there.

"We get also some warnings about our team reacting like this and I think you have to do it, you have to protect each other but we want to keep our standards and values at Man United, keep them high."
