Manchester United fans question Bruno Fernandes role after he fumes in Portugal defeat

Manchester United fans feel Bruno Fernandes may be causing Erik ten Hag a problem after once again seeing him lose his temper.

The United star is currently away on international duty with Portugal, and was in action on Sunday night as his nation took on Switzerland in their latest Nations League outing. Things didn’t go according to plan for the visitors, though, as they fell to a 1-0 defeat.

With Cristiano Ronaldo rested, Portugal conceded just 55 seconds into the game in Geneva as Haris Seferovic gave the Swiss the lead. Despite registering 20 efforts on goal, the visitors couldn’t find an equaliser, although they felt they should have been presented with an opportunity in stoppage time.

Nico Elvedi was seen handling the ball after being pushed over by Andre Silva, although Portugal’s calls for a penalty were ignored. Fernandes, who had been substituted 16 minutes from time, was left incensed on the sideline, and could be seen shouting angrily and being held back by coaching staff.

It’s a sight that United fans are very familiar with, and some were left infuriated by Fernandes’ antics as he often complained to referees last season. After his latest outburst, many are questioning his credentials as captain as the conversation continues around who will get the armband next season.

Reports have suggested current skipper Harry Maguire will have showdown talks with Erik ten Hag over the captaincy before the start of the new season. The defender has faced calls from fans to give up the armband following a disappointing campaign.

Fernandes has been tipped by some supporters to potentially become United’s new captain. Many though remain unconvinced, and another outburst won’t have done him any favours.
