Manchester United fans make their feelings clear on David de Gea future

Many Manchester United supporters have been taking to social media to call for the club to either sell David de Gea or demote him next season.

The Spaniard fumbled a routine save for the only goal of the game as West Ham beat United 1-0 on Sunday. The goalkeeper let in a similar flap-handed goal in August’s 4-0 loss to Brentford before being at fault for two goals in the Europa League quarter-final loss to Sevilla.

De Gea sees his contract expire next month but the shot-stopper is set to soon be handed a new deal with reduced terms. The 32-year-old is the longest serving member in the current United squad and is the last remaining player to have last lifted the title at Old Trafford.

Fans are appreciative of his efforts over the course of his stay but some believe that now is the time to let him go. The Manchester Evening News understands that De Gea’s status as the club’s No.1 is under threat.

Erik ten Hag is facing a tough call with the injured Dean Henderson likely to leave following his comments about the club following his season-long move to Nottingham Forest. Meanwhile, loan goalkeeper Jack Butland is said to be nearing a move to Rangers following the expiration of his contract at Crystal Palace.

Regardless, though, several United fans have made their feelings known about De Gea. Several Reds-supporting MEN Sport readers believe his days are numbered and that they should come to an end soon having been a perceived liability in recent years.

Dambuster007: Time to let him go. A few seasons ago he cost us a top four spot in the same way. He knows he isn't going to get dropped and he gets complacent.

I8arrogant: De Gea has had his day, time to go. 50k a day for a goalkeeper who is useless with his feet, great shot stopper but if it were up to me I'd get a new keeper and tell De Gea if you're staying you'll be back up keeper and will need to accept a pay cut.

GrahamP: If Sir Alex was still there De Gea would be gone no messing about with new contract offer he would be out the door Sir Alex went through 13 goalkeepers a handful were outstanding like Schmeichel, Van der Gouw, Van der Sar, but Sir Alex didn't mess about, with the howlers De Gea has made over the last couple of seasons he would be gone.

Manc r us: Growing concern... it's been the same for three to four years. Good shot stopper - distribution is abysmal, doesn't command the area. Time's up time I'm afraid.

1954brad: 76% want him to go tells you everything the fans think of De Gea, the only saving grace is it would probably be the same for most of the squad. Our strikers can't hit a barn door from six yards and Bruno is never captain material, I would put money now on us not finishing top four.
